You all make some great points. I agree that not being diagnosed early forced us to adapt and grow in ways that we wouldn't have otherwise. On the flip side... I'm reminded of the messages I heard in school about being lazy, etc. My cognitive ability is extremely high, my executive functioning is e... |

I was diagnosed at 39 years old in 2008. ... I've had all kinds of friends, girlfriends, experiences and growth that I certainly wouldn't have had, or have to the degree I do, had I been diagnosed young. I don't understand the above comment. I did not have all kinds of friends, etc despite not bein... |

I don't think it's fair to say that if you had been diagnosed young you would not have had friends and girlfriends and all that you said. You don't know what your life would have been like. Even in the 80s and 90s they knew enough not to put Autistic kids in institutions and the help you would have... |

I'm 41 and was diagnosed last week. The answer to this for me is clear: had I been diagnosed early my life would not have been such a struggle and I would have been able to reach my full potential. However, had I been diagnosed early, my life would have taken a different path and I wouldn't have me... |

So after hearing numerous times from each psychologist/behavioral health specialist I saw briefly after my initial diagnosis; that my symptoms (although present) are "so mild" and how "normal" I am--it really got me thinking about my childhood and early adolescents, and how sever... |

I didn't mean to infer that you don't have ASD, sorry, I worded that first response poorly--it's early here and I'm still waking up. I meant that it sounds like you're struggling currently with chronic depression and low mood that doesn't necessarily have to have a direct relation to your ASD. When ... |

It sounds more like you're suffering more from chronic depression/low mood than ASD solely based off of what you've written here. |

Memory is selective, so you might only be focusing on experiences you viewed as negative-- I do the same thing often. I'm sure there have actually been many more times you HAVE gotten what you wanted and had positive experiences. Try scouring your memory for experiences on the other side of the coin... |

I've never understood the stigma/correlation. It seems like it contradicts the flagship traits of ASD of being overly grounded in objective, logical thinking. I've never been able to get into pure fantasy books, movies, videogames etc... Even as a sci-fi/horror junkie, the things I'm into seem to al... |

Wow, this is definitely the most relatable depiction of my own ASD in someone else I've read here or anywhere else. Which makes sense considering I've identified more with the descriptions of females on the spectrum, in their ability to adapt and blend to social situations to a greater degree than m... |

This is the one question that has plagued me the most in being un-diagnosed , as it seems to be a general consensus that people with ASD are uncoordinated goofs. I'm 33, and 99.9% sure I'm on the Autism Spectrum. The traits I have are glaring (without digressing too far from the OP, but, still prefa... |

So, I'm sure this question is posed endlessly on these threads, but, I figured I'd try and get some insight from those of you with a clinical diagnosis. I'll try to make it as concise as possible. I'm 32 years old, un-diagnosed, currently being treated for anxiety/agoraphobia. (It's been suggested I... |
