Not sure what to think really. Was convinced I wouldn't be.

To quote Tony Atwood: 'Congratulations! You have Asperger's Syndrome'.

I'm glad it went well.

There's nothing new about mindfulness. It's just the modern, secular name for what religions refer to as prayer or meditation. Practitioners and health services have simply repackaged it for use among those who don't belong to a religion, and charge handsomely for it. But if it works for you, and yo...

Why not just autism/autistic? I mean a blind person is just blind. A deaf person is deaf. A paraplegic person is paraplegic. A person with epilepsy has epilepsy is epileptic. A person with cerebral palsy has cerebral palsy. All of those are serious disabilities, but none have extra tags. There are ...

It is out as of yesterday. The best thing so far is can remove apps from the screen I do not want that Apple used to force me to keep. Yes! The first thing I did within seconds of installing iOS 10 was to delete those f***ing apps! Actually it's not bad. I like the new features in Messages that all...

Eloquently and honestly put. A lot of people exist in a state of denial that is as dangerous for the world as it is for them. I know I'm being a little harsh but the "us and them" attitude held firmly by the Brits (and probably everyone else) is not benefiting Homo sapiens at a global lev...

Can we drop the D in ASD? I mean that I do not feel like I have a disorder, this is me, take it or leave it. Yes I do find difficulty fitting in sometimes. I find social occasions where you are expected to mingle oppressive. I am not being antisocial gravitating to the corners, I'm not surrounded i...

That worries me somewhat. I'm also in the UK and attended an assessment at the Tower Hamlets Autism service in October. I'm hoping it doesn't go for too long for various reasons which I cannot mention here. To add to what Jute says above, psychologists are slightly wary about diagnosing older adult...

Simon Baron-Cohen uses very rational and well argued reasoning. He gets my vote for president of the world. I agree. He makes some excellent points - despite the fact that, as a profession, psychologists exist to diagnose and treat what their own official manuals describe as 'disorders'. Which show...

My diagnosis states "Autistic Spectrum Condition," so it seems that some institutions and individuals have already dropped using the "D," thankfully. Yes, this is quite common now - in the UK at least. Manuals like DSM-V continue to refer to it as a disorder, but clinicians are ...

We're not to blame for what someone else's ancestors did. The "sins of the father argument" was tried here in Australia to justify genocide of the original inhabitants and (mostly) to avoid financial reparations in the same way the Germans and Japanese squirmed after accusations of genoci...

I think most communities are made up of individuals with some conflicting beliefs. For instance, Wrong Planet has a community made up of a very diverse group of people who do share many similarities. Yes, I agree. But the differences of opinion within the neurodiversity movement are quite extreme a...

Seems doubtful to me considering autism is primarily a social impairment, it would be more akin to a community of bipolars or schizophrenics suddenly arising than the gay or deaf ones who do not have the same social impairment in my opinion. It doesn't seem like people on the spectrum agree or even...

^ What a wonderful post. Very evocative of life in Britain, then and now. Your description of the individuals employed as 'carers' is absolutely spot on. Where do they get these people from? Like you I was diagnosed later in life, so although our experiences have been different in any number of ways...

Well, I don't know. I am, of course, autistic but managed to stay under the radar through all those exciting times. This book offers me no hope at all - I was fifty two when I learned of autism and fifty seven when the diagnosis became official. I live in a world where there are a few percent of pe...
