Have you tried Xfce on Gentoo? It's been a number of years but that combo used to run fast for me on old hw or tiny VMs.

I have the paid version of Pandora, it plays most of the night, about 6 hours I think. When it stops it displays a message asking if you are still listening at which point you can restart it.

The app on the iPhone/iPad has a sleep timer also, so you can set it to go off when you want.

I would suggest you install Linux in a virtual machine on your Mac so you can run both at the same time. Virtual Box is free so that is a great place to get started. VMWare Fusion and Parallels are two commercial alternatives if you have $$$ to burn or have more specific needs. If you haven't decide...
