Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Getting a diagnosis in England?

The diagnostic process in England is laughably bad and erratic. I went to see my GP. He gave me a short screening test which showed it was worth referring me onward. Three months later I found out that my local health authority have no diagnostic services whatsoever for adults* with suspected autism...

Thank you for all the responses. I have problems with idea of people finding identity in medical label, esp if they say they are autistic without diagnosis. I'm not looking for an "identity"; that's partly what my writing was about and I have never said I am autistic. I have spent a good d...

I've never had any interest in sex. I'm not repulsed by it or anything, nor have I made a conscious decision to avoid it. It's just totally irrelevant to me in the same way that knitting or synchronized swimming or fashion are totally irrelevant to me.

I wish I was somebody. I wish I had an identity. Something to call myself other than just Me. Nobody is interested in just Me. If only I had another word to call myself, I could stand up and proclaim to the world, “Hey, look at me everybody, I'm a………something”. Maybe I could have a trawl around the...

I wanted to be a train driver, but I ended up as a..........train driver! I love my job. I get to spend most of my time at work by myself without having to speak to people. I rarely have to make decisions. Everything I have to do is either written down on paper, or I am following a set of specific i...

Oh no. I tried to edit my post to add a comma to that second sentence and now I can't because the website just keeps logging me out when I try.

I get ridiculously annoyed with myself when this happens.

As for typos in books they completely interrupt my flow when I'm reading.

Is there also perhaps an issue here with the term "self diagnosis"? In my own case when I say, "I'm self diagnosed", I'm not saying, "Yes I definitely have Asperger's". I'm saying, "I'm fairly certain", or "almost certain" that I have it. I am not ab...

My parents are both dead so wouldn't be much help with describing my childhood behaviour. I don't even have things like school reports anymore. Pretty much the only information I have is what I can personally remember.

I'm self diagnosed. I'm reasonably certain of my diagnosis. I have no interest in telling anyone else about it. My reason for self diagnosis was trying to understand why I'm the way I am. For years it was something I was ashamed of and have only recently come to accept that I probably do have an ASD...

I don't have an official diagnosis so I'm not sure whether anything I do counts as a stim. If I'm sitting down I nearly always cross my feet over at the ankles and then constantly waggle them about randomly whilst wiggling my toes up and down. I also have to play with anything within reach of my han...

Bit of an old thread but I thought I'd have a play with this. I've had fifty years practise at trying to get this sort of thing right but found that if I looked at the pictures first without looking at the answers I had no idea about nearly all of them. One looked like someone squinting into the sun...

I've always had them for as long as I can remember. Sometimes they're less intense than this one; occasionally a bit more. They seem to occur in response to a variety of stimuli. This one was after a discussion with my manager at work where we disagreed on a particular working practice. He was calm ...

Sorry, I know this topic has been very extensively discussed and have read several of the existing threads. I'm a complete newbie here (Hi!) and am trying to decide whether I have Asperger's or not. I appreciate no one here can give me a diagnosis and I'm not sure I even want one anyway. I would jus...
