Where did I argue that reason is invalid? I said that reason depends on presuppositions. (Actually, to be specific, I made no arguments at all. I simply presented a couple of general ideas.) Nom, when I mention "reason" in passing and ask you to clarify your position, and your first response is to ...

Since savant abilities can and most often do exist independently of autism, how can we treat autism as anything other than an a...

I question "reason" as a foundationalism. Reason, inductive or deductive, is impossible without making presuppositions. And there goes the smoke bomb. Allow me to be even more crude and simplistic than before. You argue that A- reason is invalid B- an argument from an invalid premise is untrue C- t...

Socially inept, yet can work very well designing web pages. Still, he can't make that work for him - he hasn't the ability to deal with business and society in the world. He doesn't have the ability to exploit the talents given him by Autism. Some autistics, like your brother, have savant abilities...

No, I support the social model of disability - first and foremost because it was the conclusion I reached as a teenager, long before I ever heard of it. However, second to that, I see it supported inductively from the broad number of cases I have come across (reading, interviewing, directly observi...

The disabled are not differently abled. They lack what others have. I mean sure, by really stretching I could dream up some bizarre situation in which it might be an advantage to have no legs, but by and large such a disability manifests as absence, not difference . The question is, What do others ...

The social model of disability can be constructed in various ways. There are some people who reject the very notion of being differently abled and, instead, focus on being differently enabled. I think it makes more sense to develop the social model of disability so that these two concepts are seen ...

What this is fundamentally about is the Social Model of Disability, which applies (although, sadly, isn't applied often enough) to mental difference as well as to physical, and teaches that it's not physical or mental difference which disables people, but the refusal of a disablist society to accep...

"Disabled" doesn't describe who/what we are, it describes what is unfairly done to us. Recognise this, and we (in the autism community) can build much more powerful and mutually supportive links with all kinds of other disabled, dispossessed or marginalised people(s)... The social model of disabili...

No you aren't. In fact, I seriously doubt you know a lot at all. We're not asking for the world, just the same kind of consideration that any reasonably person would expect. What do fairness and reason have to do with it? If Wolfpup's boss has chosen to play dominance games around this issue, Wolfp...

For seriously people...I talked to the local organizer on the phone today. He says their second youngest member is 42. I may not even go to the meetings if there's not prospect of meeting people my own age.

Right on, nz! Teaching is hard . It's not a matter of intellect. Some people have a knack for it, and for them it's the easiest thing in the world. For people with severe social deficits, I wouldn't recommend it. To any who are thinking of teaching, I urge you at the very least to try a student teac...

Yeah, I completely get you on this one. I would even go so far as to suggest that high school grads work a year before college. Working really gives you a sense of what life is like for people who don't apply themselves and make the right decisions early in life. If I had worked a bit before college...
