Neither my 12 yo or 8 yo sons can tie their laces yet. I just buy them shoes with a Velcro strap as even with repeated instruction and practise, they just can't get it. When I used to buy shoes with laces, the 12 yo would either leave them tied up, tuck the loose laces in or ask someone else to tie ... |

I've noticed that since I've started homeschooling my sons, they now avoid people almost all the time. They only want to interact and communicate with their siblings and us as parents. They spend a lot more time in their room and don't want to play outside with other children anymore. I might have t... |

I appreciate all of the feedback. I had no intention of trying to get her to stop the hand stim, she has always done it and it doesn't bother any of us. I was simply curious as to whether the reason behind it might be linked to being on the spectrum or if it was just a habit she didn't grow out of. ... |

With my son I have always been open and honest with him about what his appointments and assessments were related to. He's eleven years old now and was diagnosed at nine. I thought it was important that he know about his diagnosis so that he could better understand the difficulties that he's had his ... |

My eldest daughter (12 1/2 years old) has been a hand flapper her entire life and tbh I never thought of it as an autistic trait, despite knowing that it's a stereotypical one. Family see it as cute quirk, a remnant of her childhood but the more I thought about it, the more I wondered. She does it a... |

I get major anxiety whenever I know I have to spend time with people, even family. I'm only relaxed around my children and husband. I'm generally polite and talk as much as I have to but deep down I'm just counting down until I can leave or they leave. |

I tend to adopt the traits of those around me when I am with them or people I am fascinated with. I will use their expressions, way of speaking, slip into their accents...it's an unconscious thing really. Others have commented how different I used do speak and how I never used curse words before I m... |

I don't know that it is typically an autism related thing since I know of other people who do this but I personally, have watched movies to the point I could reenact them and know every line but usually only favourites. |

My mother has decided she is fascinated by autism all of a sudden and has been 'researching' and said in her job (she has worked with children under 5 for over 30 years) she has noticed a rise in the amount of children being diagnosed with autism. She believes there must be a cause for this and seem... |

Usually I either take a shower or have a bath every day but when I have had times I've felt exhausted and uncomfortable during pregnancy I could go 2-3 days without washing. In hot weather I wash more often, twice a day or more if it's really bad. I despise feeling sweaty, it is the main reason I ha... |

Ive written on and off since I was around 10 years old but never finished anything. I find I am easily distracted and when I re-read things I have written I don't like it and end up deleting it or tearing it up if hand written. My theme has always run towards the supernatural/fantasy fiction as I've... |

I prefer to walk at a steady, almost slow pace when I'm alone and not surrounding by people but when I am in a busy environment with lots of others I speed up a lot. I will always overtake, I weave in and out of people, I bounce on my feet impatiently sighing and grumbling when I'm stuck behind some... |

I think it's fair to say Minecraft is out. My son gets easily frustrated and would probably just refuse to play if it's too awkward. You're right. The best thing I can do it treat the games on a case by case basis. I am not opposed to violence in all forms, just with things that are overly extreme ... |

I don't know that they are worse but rather that I can express them more freely now that I have no pressure to conform to normality daily. When I was younger and I was expected to socialise and interact with people at school or work, I had to repress an awful lot. Now that I am older, I have the sam... |

I can and do get intrusive negative memories from my past, usually related to my social incompetence. Things I did or said that were stupid and embarrassing. Recent screw ups often trigger these thoughts and then I feel badly about them even though rationally I know that the people involved I will n... |
