A group of people, including Mrs. Einstein, were invited to the grand opening of an astronomical observatory: As the group is lead into the big dome hall with the huge telescope, the guy showing them around proudly exclaims with a profound voice: "With this instrument, it is our intent to uncover th...

Neither my stationary machine nor my laptop has a floppy drive, and I don't really miss such drives. As far as reliability for 1.44meg floppies on the pc goes, I have mixed experiences (always took TWO floppies with the same contents with me when I needed to transport something that fitted onto a si...

(insert manly YEARRRRRRH! here) -- real men do self-modifying, undocumented, spaghetti-style assembly code -- that high-level, object-oriented stuff is for civil engineers and such wussies! I cut my assembly teeth on the Commodore 64, the 6510 CPU of which is part of the famous 6502 family of 8-bitt...

I picked that one up from the web site of a flight school... :!:

Retrocomputing? Oh-yeah! Big Commodore fan here, who started out 23 years ago with the SX-64 (a portable version of the well-known Commodore 64). And I still enjoy coding stuff in assembler on that little 8-bit, ~1 MHz machine! I even have a Commodore 64 emulator in my cell phone! :D Besides the SX,...

Here's one suggestion for a plan to get through January with the least amount of collateral damage: You'll need * Supplies of just about to last you a month. Be sure to have things like remedies for making hot cocoa... * An armload of excuses not to leave the house for the duration of the month. * A...

Yes, the gatling may be a little easier to carry around. Just remember to pull the parking brake before firing that thing; the recoil of it kicks worse than a horse! As for the Dr. Strangelove movie thing: The title figure in it is a mad-head german nuclear scientist (played by Peter Sellers) who's ...

Actually a scenario like this ran through my head when I heard that on one of the planes involved in 9/11 the passenger had taken up the fight with the hijackers. I'v been "flight-simulating" quite a lot on my machine, so I thought I might actually be able to get the thing on the ground siginificant...

Hmmm -- lasers; they look pretty fancy in the movies, but I've worked in a research lab that had plenty of lasers around: Around a 1'x1'x4' specimen I once saw places where the beam from it had accidently struck the walls and other surfaces. It makes no more damage than dropping an ember from the ti...

Rule #1 on jokes: If you need to explain the punch line of it, it's dead! Just go "Oh, nevermind" if someone "doesn't get it" -- unless someone around you insists on an explanation. Rule #2 on jokes: Got a joke you want to tell? Unless you explicitly want to be sarcastic or harsh, check your joke fo...

Stealth you say... does that mean it won't show on a radar? Speaking of stealth and fighter jets, perhaps a tad of army green and camouflage patterns may be applied for "covering up" any "handicapped signals" with a touch of not-to-be-f*cked-with military gear. No more bullying handicapped fo...

As a kid I had a little issue telling the "front" from the "back" on shirts, sweaters and similar items of clothing. So on one occation she went ahead with what I saw as the coolest invention since the transistor, and knit a sweatshirt with identical front and back side for me! :D

Envious of other people's social skills...? No. During the years I've sorta' kinda' learned to get by to some extent. I know I'm far from "perfect" in this field, but in the right "settings" I get by just fine...

Strapples, did I hear you call for a rocket ship? Like, with two HUGHE rocket engines at the rear, heatshielding for reentry like the Space Shuttle. And with a cheeky red paint job? If you've got a suitable head-gear replacement for handling the computer's keyboard, mouse and a joystick, have a look...

Time only "got started" with the Big Bang. And the laws of physics, i.e. natural forces like gravity and the electromagnitism that constitutes light (among other things), had to be "sorted out" in the first few billionths of a billionth of a billionth of a second. In a situation where time itself ha...

Pretty interesting thread here, even though I'm by all means what you call a "walkie". When I see someone in an electrical wheel chair around here, the things are seemingly designed to "scream out" that they are an aid for handicapped people. Nothing there to suggest that the user might just be a ga...
