If you come across weird they don't want to be seen as too friendly with you in case they come of weird too. Maybe, but I don't think I'm that weird. :( I often see these people outside of work but they don't really say hello. In fact, it can be really awkward when we do see each other. For instanc...

This may seem silly, but it's something I've noticed all my working life. I have thought about it but I am not sure what the root cause is, and I would like to find out how I can figure it out, if you know what I mean? I am an engineer. I work in an office. I do designs, paperwork, calculations. Som...

It's a really subjective statement. It depends on who you are and what you value. I think the best you can do is find people you're comfortable being yourself with, and accept that there will be more stringent limits on behaviour around everybody else. For instance I would never dare talk about anim...

Awkward title, I know. :D Do I need to change my eye contact habits when listening to women in the workplace? I have had really awkward problems in previous jobs. During one of my internships, a senior female colleague walked past my desk every day - I would do what I normally do, and quickly glance...

Try asking people questions. Start with simple questions such as 'how was your weekend' and 'how's it going', then eventually they will warm to you and you can ask more questions, then you will eventually have a good idea of people's histories and personal lives, which can help explain their behavio...

Hi, I know this topic was a long time ago, but a hell of a lot has happened and I feel a bit low at the moment. I'll recount this tale below, but I'm going to miss out details for the sake of brevity. It's long enough as it is!! My GP diagnosed me with work induced anxiety last month, so I now have ...

I had a phone call with a Clinical Psychologist from Occupational Health (OHS) today. The first thing she explained was that nobody there had experience with AS, but she would be researching it over the next few weeks. I told her about the 'Operators Manual' and she said she didn't know anything abo...

It might be worth asking your psychologist to help you write a form of 'Operators' Manual', if not for your current job then for use in the future. It should definitely include the way AS affects you personally, how it presents in your specific case, to make the point that people on the spectrum ar...

If you worked in a factory type setting you might get away with flipping out at your project manager, but in an office environment you're probably already being managed out. From your age, I'm assuming you're in a junior position (could be wrong) in which case you're pretty disposable and they'll w...

Hi, Thanks for the replies. An 'Operators Manual' sounds like a good idea, however I think I'll have to do some serious reflection before I can write anything about myself. I've been diagnosed since I was 7 years old but I guess I've always been ashamed and tried to get through life without acknowle...

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not officially in trouble, but I've been referred to Occupational Health to see a psychologist so we can work out what I need.

Hi, I've been in my job for 12 months. I declared my AS on my application form. Things went quite well at first, my line manager asked me to explain the symptoms of my AS, and I realised the answer was that I don't really know, so I said I just have bog standard AS and started listing typical sympto...

I think it might help if you tell your flatmates? I'm no expert but experience tells me your mileage may vary - do you know them well?

Don't forget it won't be plain sailing - nothing ever is. Sometimes, to succeed, all you need to do is endure. :D

I've never felt like a genius about anything. A shame, because I feel like I'm owed it as compensation for my social deficits. Yes, there is an enabling superpower that autists have through damage and accident, but non-autists like me have to cultivate: not giving a s**t about monkey social ri...

I don't think Americans are any worse than anybody else. Overall, the world is getting better in many, many respects. Conjecture: I think in the short term people could be irrational because we're in/just out of (depending) a recession and on average people are probably looking for ways to make them...

I see you said the games were digital downloads and Amazon purchases. I don't have any sources but I've hard it said many times that people are less careful when they spend on card because they don't see how much money they're spending! I don't know how that helps, I know I cut my irl spending down ...
