Ah, but the problem with that is the response is usually "fine" or "nothing much happened" And then your stuck for something else to say. OK, that is a weakness. I think more generally when you have nothing to say you can probe the other person for information about themselves. ...

In the time between asking the question new events have taken place, expanding the set of past events the answer is based on. That makes it new, yes?

It seems that one of the things one can do is ask the person about their day/work/school everyday. It is one question but because time has past it refers to a different time period effectively making it a new question.
