I wear shades even when it's overcast, because it helps me avoid sensory overload. Sadly, others have pointed out that it looks silly. What about you? Do you wear shades? On what occasion? |

When you're in a meltdown, you can't process even the most rudimentary information. You have no idea what's happening around you, and everything feels confusing: even trying to find the direction in which to walk. As you can't process anything and everything feels mixed up, you naturally can't do an... |

I remember reading once about the possibility of the Internet waking up one day as a collective consciousness. How do you think it might happen (if it can at all)? After all, the way the routers and machines are connected is very similar to a biological neural network. And the way some algorithms, s... |

Yes, I'm very socially awkward, both in my style and my non-verbal communication (including social expressions). People have told me that they can tell that I'm autistic right away. Sadly, they automatically assume that this implies that I'm mentally handicapped in some way. For example, my doctor t... |

Autism is characterized by its heterogeneous development of intellectual and other cognitive skills. Some skills may be very poorly developed, at a level typical that of a person with mental retardation. On the other hand, some other skills may be brilliant. And not so rarely, people with autism who... |

There are some old friends I had back to high school that I want to contact. What's the social norm for doing this? What should I say? |

If it's a hobby, you would need to be familiar with a large amount of topics in advanced computer science, mathematics and statistics to accomplish this what a fortunate coincidence then :) you didn't stop to think that you don't know about my individual skills and background, did ya? and probably ... |

doubly missing the point again. first: it's a hobby . it makes no difference if it's useless. "why not just <any other idea> instead?". simple. because i don't care about <whatever other idea you have in mind>. second: that was not what i was talking about. i don't see a point in trying a... |

well... ever heard of a hobby? besides, i'm not really concerned with how useful my hobby could be for society, other than for its potential profitability. and even that is not a decisive factor anyway. all i'm really concerned with is that it would be fun :D. oh and i don't think it's going to cos... |

Let's say I'm participating in an e-mail conversation with someone. When they acknowledge what I said, and say that they're looking forward to meeting me in person again to discuss about the topic in more detail, how am I supposed to respond? Am I supposed to respond at all? Or is the conversation c... |

We have so many useful problems in computer science that would lead to much benefit to the society if they could be solved, and so many algorithms which could be developed. Ranging from those which pertain economic accounting and statistics to those which could be used in exact sciences. But then so... |

How to bring a conversation to an end, without making another person think that you're not interested in who they are? Let's say you want to talk to that person later (in a few days), but don't have enough time to go on with the conversation right now for one reason or another. How to then politely ... |

Textbook ASD guy here. Need to figure out what my next move is going to be, and as I see all the fields of learning that once were well-suited for an ASD-type (e.g., book-keeping, transactional law, stenography) go the way of the dodo because of software, I want to be the one writing the software. ... |

I can't tell you how much I wish I had been, and that I had been told early, too. I was diagnosed at age 31. My son was diagnosed at 4. I'm glad it will be different for him. I was diagnosed when I was 4 as well, as my dad told me. I feel grateful that my parents actually took time to develop me as... |
