Thank you everyone, for participating, especially your insightful comments, Jono. I am also working my way through these: as a South Africa autism advocate I would like to issue a response within the next week or so and will let you know when that is done. Just a bit of background: no autistic advoc...

Perhaps you may be aware of the MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution) scandal that is making waves around the world, where parents are using a highly controversial bleach formula to "cure" their kids from autism, by either giving it to them orally or tubing it in via enema. A documentary was plan...

I agree that the portrayal of this character was quite out of proportion (but nothing like what has been done on shows like Boston Legal, for instance). I guess anything goes to make for popular TV. It is disappointing that the issue of this person not being accepted and no attempts being made to ad...

Don't know if anyone else watches this series, it is a bit "soapy", but last night I watched this episode. If you watch the series, don't read further, watch the episode, otherwise, read on. It features a mom whose first born was autistic, and she is convinced it happened due to vaccines (saying thi...

If you have done nursing, how about doing the night shift? It is possible to handle NT's, it depends on whether they are nice and if they can respect you for needing space and quiet around you, and that you are not rude in your mannerisms. Yes, you get those, especially in geeky type environments. W...

I'm getting there by (among other things) taking an 18 hours flight from Johannesburg to New York. Apparently the longest non-stop commercial flight in the world. 8O

And, yes, it will be worth it.

Ok, the good news is that I asked my boss's assistant whether there is any other desk available to rather move to, and I voiced my concerns with regards to the noise, movement & busy-ness that the corner will have, and she told me Don't Worry: although there are no other desks available (the mai...

Sorry tailfins, but I am valued at my work, perhaps my post was overly negative. I don't think rushing into any assumption is wise: conversation and discussion will be my first step, with the confidence that I do have the possibility to take another job if that fails.

it could be a move to make you more productive by putting you in plain view of other people. I'm really scared that this is the reason. I am a contractor, so a) I don't really have "employee rights" as such, otherwise I would have told them I have sensory problems and they have to cater for that, a...

That layout totally sucks. Like it was designed to SUCK. I'm going to print that out and put it up on the one wall. By the way, I think there is a misunderstanding here: that space is not MY CUBICLE. I don't have a cubicle... I only have a desk. It is like an open area, people just walking up and d...

This is where they are moving me next week. I don't know what I'm going to do. (Well, not much work, for a start, and there will be at least 1 meltdown a day).

Hi Jim. Wow, you sound like an amazing, caring person, your son probably gets it from you. It is tough for kids dealing with divorce, whether they are aspies or not. What you are doing most is trying to understand your child and there is no better thing you can possibly do at this stage. THANKS. The...

I had a talk at an autism event yesterday and a lot of the questions afterwards had to do with my experience of mainstream schools. Which weren't so good, as most aspies can probably vow for. How about this: imagine a school where you do subjects in, say, two week intervals. You do Biology the first...
