I have been on meds for a couple of years and they have significantly altered my life in a positive way. I realize now that I have had massive social deficits, and with the medication, I am better able to identify and work on those. I seem to have more mental energy too but .... a) I still have exec... |

Thank you for the resource. It was interesting to read, and I hope that research on autistic women continue. But I have to ask who the woman is. It makes me a little apprehensive about how qualified someone is if they can't create a professional-looking powerpoint. (Not that it was bad - it just did... |

Did/does anyone else experience obsession with rules? It was only a couple months ago that I realized this might be something related to ASDs. When I was a kid, I never broke rules. I'd blindly follow rules because the adults put the rules into place and the adults were correct. I'd get really upset... |

When I was a teenager, people would make comments like 'When you have children' and I'd tell them that I never wanted kids. They'd always respond with something like 'you'll change your mind.' I'm older now, and I don't want to have kids. I almost feel bad because something-something-something carry... |

No one takes you seriously. When you really need help, it's not there because you've been so good at pretending all along that everyone thinks you're fine and can manage perfectly well. So when you start to stumble, everyone's confused and/or annoyed at you. People don't try to understand you or you... |

Nothing quite so scientific as pituitary glands. I was just wondering if there could be significant gaps/lapses in special interests, particularly in the area of not having any before puberty-ish. |

I'm wondering if it's possible to have special interests appear in puberty without having had any during childhood. I had many things I loved as a kid, but some obsessive behaviors are normal as a kid. It wasn't until I hit puberty that the litany of special interests and obsessions started. I've ha... |

My parents do this. They pretend like my issues don't exist or that I'm just exaggerating. They've shut me down in conversation before, and they've denied the repercussions of having undiagnosed problems. It made me feel pretty lousy knowing that they attributed these problems to character flaws rat... |

When I was in high school, we weren't allowed to wear coats in the classroom because they didn't want us to be warm. Because if we were warm, we'd be more likely to fall asleep. We were, however, allowed to wear sweatshirts. |

I don't notice the details. A change in beard (growth or removal) could stump me as well. |

A month and a half is a long time to feel so unhappy. I've quit therapists after one day or after a couple of weeks . . . there's no minimum amount of time you're required to stay with a therapist. So if you're uncomfortable, ditch him and go back to the old person. |

I'm going to repeat what I said earlier, but also clarify: You both need therapy if you're not already in it, and if you are, then you need to tailor it to the fact that you two are joined at the hip, which really isn't appropriate for a parent and child. Being close is one thing, but son, you need ... |

I say this with as much kindness as I can: you both need therapy. And if you're already in therapy, maybe you need more therapy. I have read nothing in this thread that would be taken as offensive or belittling. I'm sorry if you perceive people's words that way, but you can't expect anyone--autism f... |

I wouldn't disclose to my family because they don't believe in that stuff unless you're COMPLETELY impaired or have to be hospitalized. Nor would I disclose to my boss because that can cause all sorts of other problems. I guess the only people I'd tell would be close friends or random strangers on t... |
