I am a mom to a wonderful little 3-year-old boy on the spectrum. Today I was talking with a co-worker and mentioned my son was autistic, and she scolded me and said, "No, your son has autism. Saying he's autistic implies that all he is his disability." I actually felt ashamed for calling h...

I have a son who just turned 3 this month who has moderate (Level 2) ASD. Prior to a few months ago, he was completely non-verbal. He now can say around 50 words, but they are all nouns used for labelling (kitty - points to our cat, etc.). We have a talking device for him, but he doesn't yet underst...

"Some of this may just be normal kid stuff." This is a struggle for me too... he is my first child, so I struggle to determine what is "autism-based" stuff and what is just "normal picky toddler playing his mom with his antics" stuff. I have a strong aversion to ...

Understandable! I am NT and will eat almost anything, and I can see how mayo could gross people out. It is sour, fatty, and gloopy... I like it, but I know MANY NT people that hate it too. And ditto on stuffing - "wet bread" is an accurate description! haha. It is virtually the only thing ...

"I just keep thinking about my mum when I was your son's age. I wasn't non-verbal, but I was very very "reserved" and I remember the frustration on both of our parts because I couldn't articulate very well what was wrong." OMG this. ^^^^ His inability to communicate is what makes...

For what it is worth, I appreciated the overkill! ;) Hello! I have a 2.5-year-old son with moderate ASD (non-verbal). He has had issues with eating since about 12 months of age. Currently he will only eat: 1) A single brand of yogurt that comes in a squeeze pouch. He will not eat yogurt from a spoon...

I think you're on to something with both the "feel" of the spoon and him being able to regulate what goes into his mouth at his own pace with a squeeze pouch. I suspect he might have apraxia, but no speech pathologists will even attempt to diagnose him until he turns 3. I actually purchase...

For me, it's often the texture, sometimes also the taste or smell. There are some things I can eat raw but not cooked. I never cared about things like packaging, though.

But what about the texture/smell bothers you? Does it make you feel nauseous? Or just generally grossed out?

My son (now 26 months) was diagnosed with ASD when he was 19 months. Although my husband accepts the diagnosis and isn't in denial that my son has ASD, he has left me to deal of all aspects of dealing with our son's diagnosis on my own. I was the one to call EI when our son was 16 months old and fel...
