It boils down to doing boring stuff that are not urgent. Cleaning house, washing clothes, paying bills, washing dishes, mowing the lawn, trimming the hedges, buying new clothes, changing bed linens... In many cases, my procrastinations causes things to build up, and become overwhelming. I'll do it ... |

I have ADHD too, and lists and whiteboards are my best friends! I seriously have a paper planner, a To-Do list app on my phone, and 2 whiteboards on my freezer- one weekly schedule and one for notes/grocery list. Do you have more trouble keeping track of dates/times, things to do, or do you mostly l... |

What do you find you struggle with most in daily life? I forget to eat all the time, I don't drink enough water, and when I was working from home I frequently forgot to shower or wash my hair (or even put on real clothes sometimes). I set things down without putting them away and they just pile up -... |

I'm writing a blog post for autistic adults about how to plan/cover for your weaknesses for independent living. The basic idea is: don't beat yourself up if you frequently forget to cook dinner, just make a point to have quick, easy meals on hand for those times - and other contingencies for stuff w... |

What do you wish the rest of the world knew about how to help you thrive? What do you wish your teachers, bosses, parents, friends, partners, or coworkers knew about what you need to be at your best? Maybe it's something about stimming, or sensory issues, or how to explain things to you, or maybe it... |

I've heard it said that the way autistic/Asperger's people perceive the world is a trauma in itself, much like the earlier poster who pointed out that we can't tune out sensory or emotional input. So much of the world seems like an assault to us. If that is so, which I could believe, that would logi... |

In a few points: 1) I would never tell anyone how they should feel about being autistic, since I don't know anyone else's journey. 2) I've had a lot of grief and a lot of difficulty in my life due to my ASD, and part of me wishes I could do what NTs can do so easily sometimes. It's a rough life, and... |

Everyone likes chicken nuggets, autistic or NT or anything else. Chicken nuggets are wonderful things (whether you prefer fast food over-processed stuff or organic homemade versions, they're delicious!). |

Thanks for all the responses, everyone. Reading them all, I've come to an idea I never thought of before (that difficulty imagining other people's point of view, I guess). Meltdowns vary greatly between people, and across causes. I feel stupid for not realizing that before. Thank you for helping me ... |

NerdBird17, my therapist basically said the same thing - what did I want to do when I was a kid? All I ever wanted to be was a professional dancer. I've now aged out of that possibility, and I'm not good enough with kids to teach (very little money in it anyway). I never had any other plans. She kee... |

I was diagnosed last year, at 35. On the one hand, yes, it changed a lot of things. I was no longer a complete failure at being a person, I was just autistic. But on the other hand, I don't quite know what to do with that. I don't know how to figure out what's me and what's the mask, or what I reall... |

Raleigh, that sounds terrible! I certainly wouldn't initiate them if they hung on for weeks, I'm really sorry that's how it is for you.
I just use the vids to get it started. It gives me a way to kind of "schedule" the screaming and flailing, so it can be done at home in private. |

I can't help you, but I can commiserate. I was once told that I was well-respected at work because I do my job better than anyone, but I was not well-liked because I didn't smile at people and I didn't say good morning and I didn't stop to chat and make small talk and be friendly. I not only got pas... |

I was trying to explain to my therapist that, as certain stresses build up, I can tell that I'm headed for a meltdown. Sure, I can calm down enough for the moment, maybe even for the day, but if particular stresses continue to build over the course of several days, I NEED a meltdown. I likened it to... |

I read somewhere that those diagnosed with ASD in adulthood frequently feel a relief and a chance to "get back to being myself". I was diagnosed last year at 35 and finally felt like I had the freedom to be myself - only to realize that I have no idea who I actually am. People keep asking ... |

If you typically get cold, wear a sweater or at least long sleeves - check with the dentist's office, though, if they're doing IV sedation, sleeves may get in the way. If you tend to be warm, light clothes/short sleeves. If you need pressure to feel calm, you can take a weighted blanket or you can a... |
