I've just recently accepted my diagnosis and started to learn how autism affects me. I hate feeling like I am living inauthenticly, and I would like my friends to understand me better. Yet, I worry that their preconceived notions would get in the way, and that that would cause them to understand me ... |

I am both autistic and someone who spent a lot of time socially isolated when I was younger. While my difficulties with social skills could be explained by either (or both), other things seem to point more towards autism. For example, I am very sensitive to lights, sounds, textures, and am prone to ... |

Since around 7, huh. I wonder if I would have been more likely to accept it had I been that young. Fewer preconceived notions that way... but maybe not, if it's so common for people to doubt. Honestly, I figured most people were diagnosed when they were young and understood it from a young age. But ... |

elbowgrease, yes, definitely! I also sometimes catch myself doing things I didn't consciously realize I did. I've thought "Well, maybe the doctors were right, but I dunno, I don't do the hand flapping thing..." then caught myself flapping my hands when I was alone and excited about somethi... |

Sorry for the delayed response, everyone. I've been busy this week. Hello there. As I'm 42 now I was only recently diagnosed with severe high-functioning Asperger's Syndrome only four months ago now. I have to admit I'm still coming to terms with all of this and my anxiety has gone up considerably b... |

I don't see why it is unreasonable to get upset at disrupted plans if it involves a betrayal of trust. Somebody has just stolen days or years from my life. Maybe I care because of the biggest distinction of AS - I'm trying to share my enhanced abilities, not just have another day. Modern schooling ... |

I don't mind big spaces in general, but I do find smaller rooms more relaxing. I like things like big, decorated churches and castles. They're pretty and impressive to look at. I hate sleeping if I'm not in a small, enclosed space, though. Doors closed, no large empty spaces. When I was younger and ... |

When I was younger, I was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (now considered part of autism spectrum disorder, or social communication disorder in some cases). I ignored it for a long time, but have recently begun to accept and learn more about it. It's a relief to have certain traits of mine explained, especia... |

I like regular doors better. Normal doors are simpler. Just walk right through. Why should I need to go in a circle to go straight ahead? Revolving doors are uncommon, so they always throw me off a little when I have to use them. |

It's a stereotype, but nerd culture really does have a higher rate of autism. So being involved with anime conventions and clubs, I've met people on the spectrum besides my brothers. Some I could tell right away, and some I had no idea until they told me. I think this has helped me get a more varied... |

Fluffysaurus: PDD-NOS seems to have been a catchall "You don't quite fit the usual criteria of autism or Asperger's, but you have enough of the traits that we know you're not neurotypical." So you might have a more mild presentation of autism, or you might have traits that are severe in on... |

My situation might be a bit odd. When I was teenager, I was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder- not otherwise specified. For a long time, I completely dismissed it. At the time, I was sick of being told that there was something wrong with me, and I refused to accept that I had a disorde... |
