Socks are both useful and troublesome for me. They have to be just the right material, thickness, and seams or it will be a rough day. My feet are very sensitive, and it seems more so with the development of neuropathy. Sometimes the neuropathy gives the illusion of a sock with a crease under my foo...

I do not know. Burnout needs to be studied, and society needs to understand that autism does not magically disappear on the 21st birthday.

I can tolerate a mask if sitting still for a while, but if I am ambulating I quickly get the trouble breathing panic attack. My work is mostly outdoors, so no problem there. I usually wear the mask to get in the door then take it off once inside. Only one merchant made a big deal over it. I explaine...

I have read this statistic before. It is true that some are able to learn to mask so well that their autism does not show. There is also an understudied phenomenon where it all falls apart later in life with disasterous results known as autistic burnout. While some are able to recover from this burn...

I hate them. They trigger the start of a sensory meltdown nearly everytime I wear one. My sensory issues are variable with little predictability. I was able to tolerate a mask while stationary, but not while ambulating. I do try to comply, but usually end up pulling it off or leaving in a panic to a...

Wearing the required mask in public (sold in packs of 10 for $15.) Worst shopping experience ever! Walking through the store feeling as if I was suffocating. I had to leave before I had everything. Still do not feel right. Guess I will finish shopping in another county that does not require masks.

Both. If set on a specific task with no pressure I am able to observe and process sensory input often finding things that others have missed. But I still find my sensitivities to be mostly a nuisance. The strange looks that I get as I retreat to my truck for my earmuffs say it all. It is cool you a...

I am very good at identifying which direction a sound came from. Hearing is a mixed bag for me. Many sensitivities, especially to duplicated digital signals and acoustically active rooms.

I would say that my eye contact is poor to selective. My wife has pointed out this deficiency. I usually do not feel the distress of eye contact with family, but the other day my four year old made direct eye contact with me and I had to look away. It made me sad, as she does not do this often and s...

I once saw a shirt that read cleverly disguised as a responsible adlut. This is an apt description of me. I still enjoy cartoons, older video games, and all things Disney, especially Goofy and Tigger.

Variability is my experience as well. Some days are better than others. There are some predictable triggers, but lately it seems to be random. It is difficult to explain why I am unable to perform a task or function in an environment when I have done so previosly. As for "getting it", I so...

I have always been slow. As a child my slowness was often cited as passive aggressive behavior. My wife will often ask me something, then storm off when I do not answer immediately. A manager at work once told me that I was not rhe fastest. I replied true, but I only have to do it once. He agreed.

This thread hit home. I do not know if I will ever get used to reading detailed accounts of my experiences written by a person that I have never met. I have a great fear of having a meltdown in public, and will do anything to avoid it. I can limp along, but I know that I am not functioning at capaci...

Two of my kids and I do this all the time. I do not recall anyone bringing it up as an adult, and only a few times as a child.
