I went to my gp a year ago (ik this is a weird time to ask, but I’ll be going back for a physical soon) and asked to be tested for autism, and she told she ‘couldn’t do that.’ I’m very confused. Also I have been told by a professional that I have autism, but they couldn’t give me a diagnosis because... |

Thank you to everyone for your input! I don't have the time to respond to everyone individually, but know that I read every comment and all of you have been heard! I will definitely keep all of this in mind while I'm writing. Another question I would have for you all is if you would like me to post ... |

By "semi-verbal," do you mean that the character has a form of selective mutism (essentially can speak sometimes, but not at other times)? I do, and nobody I've met in person ever believes me when I try to tell them, they insist that I can speak if I try hard enough, I just don't want to,... |

One of the biggest is that autistics are all the same personality wise, that all autistics are shy or hate people. It would make for an interesting character if they were autistic but outgoing and how those two things can clash. There are a lot of outgoing autistic people in the world (particularly... |

How about noise cancelling headphones? They help me deal with noisy places and they are more socially "normal" than earplugs. Morover, people are likely to assume you are listening to music and not talk to you. Would you be allowed to have them? I have earplugs, but my school pair got eat... |

Thank you guys for the suggestions. I've been trying to get diagnosed for almost 2 years at this point. Since no one was helping me find a professional, I finally asked my sports coach to help me out yesterday, who is an LLD instructor and has an autism specialist as a roommate. So hopefully that'll... |

I’m an undiagnosed female in high school. I’ve never had a meltdown during school hours, but I come close a lot. And it scares me that one day I’m going to snap and meltdown, because I don’t have a diagnosis to say that I’m autistic. I would be suspended, expelled, or maybe even arrested for aggress... |

If I'm focused on something my mind quiets down to a manageable level. If I'm not focused on something then I daydream. Thinking of a plot with moving characters and all that stuff is enough to keep my mind from wandering into a rabbit hole of random thoughts. |

Does someone want to explain the difference between meltdowns and shutdowns for me? I honestly am not sure if Ive experienced either one. Are they like a child's temper tantrum? I did that a lot when I was, well...a child. Drove my family nuts that I would "explode" over the littlest thin... |

Could you say something more about the effects of suppressing meltdowns? I'm wondering about that. Which part do you want to know? It's about building a barrier between yourself and your emotions. Cutting yourself off them. Playing a role all the time not listening to what you feel. As for the effe... |

I'm in a vaguely similar situation to you - my dad and I have been trying to get me an evaluation since august and the whole ordeal has been very confusing. If possible maybe you can ask a school counselor if they can do the evaluation, or maybe look up some autism professionals/clinics in your are... |

From what I've seen, stress is in fact one of the biggest issues with autism. Whether you get a diagnosis or not shouldn't stop you from discovering and working to eliminate sources of stress. This forum can be useful for identifying such sources. You may read a discussion on things like ear protec... |

I do live in the united states, and I am still in pediatrics. So what exactly should I be doing instead of seeing a psychologist? I don't have the means to go very far to find a doctor that's experienced with females and autism, and I have parents who don't believe I have autism in the first place. ... |

So I brought up my issues that have lead me to believe I'm autistic to my doctor a year ago. Before sending me for an actual diagnosis, my doctor checked me for other more likely conditions that would explain my symptoms (I was in the middle of a burnout, so my sensory issues and such were much more... |
