Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: What is your opinion on the "HFA vs AS" debate?

It is my opinion that the term and usage of "Asperger's" only existed to make people feel better about not being diagnosed as "Autistic." It's also my opinion that Asperger's, particularly in the US, has been over-diagnosed and inappropriately applied. I agree with the eliminatio...

Me! And I'm never afraid to admit it. I talk about it openly, I love sex, and I don't understand why other women don't like it as much. I also don't understand why they pretend to be coy about it. I would hear coworkers complain about their partners starting a shoulder massage and it turning into &q...

pardon me, but can you tell me how occupational therapy would factor into your needs? Help with ADLs, personal hygiene, life skills, things like that. Not so much the physical aspect of things as the mental/emotional side of coping with doing ADLs. I guess since I've been living on my own for so lo...

By treacherous I mean socially complicated such as to be a potential danger to someone on the spectrum. Ah ok. Well I wouldn't call these functions socially complicated. I manage just fine with a minimum of social interaction. I would say sensory issues are more of a problem with these kind of func...

Occupational therapy and/or personal assistant and/or life skills classes. Could really use support in very basic areas. I've been on my own since I was 17, raised three kids, and still really struggle to handle shopping, paying bills, and personal hygiene. I make it work, and my kids are awesome, b...

I was quiet and kept to myself all the time. Would spend hours spinning or listening to music, or just laying in the grass and staring at the sky. I had/have a fascination with routes and maps and I'd wander all over the place just to learn and memorize routes. Still do. Did some self-banging and bi...

Nope, don't shave a hair on my body. Hate the feeling of air on my skin, hate the feeling of hair growing in, hate the feeling of shaving, all of it. I don't wear makeup nor dresses either (unless required by dress code). I just try to be myself. Also, I think it's weird that we are expected to go t...

Same way as I deal with any other group of NTs. I show up, I am polite and do everything that's expected of me socially, but I don't really chat unless they start it, and I don't associate with anyone outside of these groups. Basically, I greet people with a smile and a bit of small talk, if require...

I don't drink and never have. It seems like a waste of money to me. Also, I don't like being intoxicated, because I like being in my own mind. I can't speak to the health benefits of it, but I can tell you water is a hell of a lot cheaper.

I cook most meals most days. Love to cook from scratch and try to feed myself and my family whole foods. I cook everything from Southern to Chinese to Central American to some Indian. But our basic diet is Southern (US) based. I cook anything anytime. It is a form of independence and self-care to me...

I was just diagnosed last year. I have three kids, ages 24, 11, and 10. If I had known before, I probably would have chosen not to have kids. They are quite taxing on sensory and other issues. However, I've done the best job I know how to do, and honestly, having to overcome my issues while parentin...

Not per se. I have a lot of things many don't - I live independently, I drive, and I have kids. But I really have to work hard to maintain these things, it's not easy. And a lot of what other people have - a full time job, a large house, a big social life - I wouldn't want. I've got a hard enough ti...
