Our son has just turned 7. He's into creating CDs. This involves mixing up tracks from various existing CDs into a new mix. He then elaborately decorates the CD with textas and creates the booklet, track list with times, front & back covers & spine. It's very important for him to cram as muc...

You're right, I do need more information. I saw it as a cliche'd old line that they trot out for all their kids classed as special needs, and I thought it revealed an underlying lack of sensitivity and belief that all they need is to be pushed into doing things in ways that are more acceptable to NT...

We've received the minutes from our recent meeting with school re my 7yo AS son. As stated in the minutes, one of the goals for 2008 is to challenge him to get out of his comfort zone. This term was not used during the meeting (we were actually very pleased and reassured with how the meeting went). ...

Sorry to hear the meeting went that way. Has the school received, or indeed applied for funding in relation to J? If not why not? The flow of funding should make positive things happen. As you may have gathered, I've also been recently looking into school's obligations, funding, etc. I've only skimm...

Happy to say that I just had a very satisfying Program Support Meeting at my son's school. It seems we're all on the same page & pulling in the same direction, to mix some metaphors. They listened and took on board our suggestions and concerns! We even shared some Aspergers resources that we'd t...

Could somebody please enlighten me on IEPs? I gather they are some kind of formal contract. What is the purpose of an IEP? Who are the parties to the contract? How does an IEP tie-in with provision of an aide? How does an IEP tie-in with funding? The context in this case is a Catholic school in Vict...

Hi aurea and Temma. I agree it would be good for Melb parents and kids to meet!

We're in Werribee. Happy to travel to inner West or North. I'll talk about this with my wife today.

aurea: I'd like to hear more about the Saturday Club if you don't mind.

Cheers.

That's not paranoia! I'm a very unemotional type, but reading about events like this gets to me like nothing else. You would like to think the school allocated your son to a teacher and mix of students that would be best for him. Have you spoken to the school about what their management plan is for ...

Thanks for all the very convincing responses, in particular Inventor. Great post. Thank you. It’s unanimous. I’ve already been atlas shopping.

Cheers.

The fact that it's geography is not the issue. It's the fact that it's been going for 4 months now and he is retaining a lot of data! To date we've been very encouraging and provided him with various geography resouces. Interestingly, his favourite is my wife's secondary school world atlas which is ...

That's great to hear Smelena & others. Our wonderful 6yo tried but didn't like little aths. Either martial arts or dancing is next on our list. He's a self taught improv dance master (imo), however occasionally he gets a bit overstimulated when dancing and just starts twirling! We let him ...

Occasionally I ask my kids to show basic facial expressions. For example, when in a book we're reading a character is angry I sometimes pause the reading and ask the kids to show me their angry face. My 4yo NT daughter does what you'd commonly expect. My 6 yo AS son typically squints, opens his mout...

- You had a 6yo son diagnosed with AS 3 months ago. - You only see your parents, siblings & their families 3-4 times per year. - You know your parents have no understanding of high functioning autism. - If you gave them a 1 page definition of AS, you know they would be very surprised and likely ...
