Also ... regarding the title of this thread, Aspergers is no longer a diagnosis. I'm just trying to figure out if there is a way to help my sister and stop her current descent into alienating the entire family. That is really a different question altogether. A diagnosis isn't going to help your sis...

I was diagnosed almost 5 years ago with ASD level 1, I was 21. There was a period of denial for me that lasted a few months, this was between the time my mom told me she thought I was autistic and when I got my diagnosis. Have you spoken to your sister about the possibility of her being on the spec...

Also ... regarding the title of this thread, Aspergers is no longer a diagnosis. I've been confused by this too. DSM is for "Mental Disorders". Then there's the ICD for "International Classification of Disease". I wonder if Psychiatrists use or still use ICD diagnostic codes whe...

Also ... regarding the title of this thread, Aspergers is no longer a diagnosis. Yes, but the website uses the term repeatedly or a variation like Aspie. I find autism spectrum too vague, as it includes exceptionally smart people, and those with profound developmental disabilities. Neural atypical ...

[quote="Arganger"]I was diagnosed at ten, when I was having daily meltdowns and a lot of issues. My mom took a business psychology class and learned about autism, it sounded a lot like me so she took me to a psychiatrist to get diagnosed. Things were far from perfect, but having a diagnosi...

I’m curious as to how and when people got diagnosed with Asperger’s. Was there a stage of denial? Does having the diagnosis help with coping skills and strategies? I’m asking because my sister is in her mid-50s and is oblivious to her life-long struggle.

Yep. I’m just trying to wrap my brain around the intractability and process the irony of her inability to see she is on the spectrum. All this helps.

Apparently, neural atypical folks posting here have accepted their diagnoses and are finding ways to cope and function, and recognize their limitations. How common is it for someone in her mid-50s to not be aware of or deny she is on the spectrum? She writes books about psychology for crying out lou...

Well, my background in psychology tells me I can’t change people. I can only change the way I respond to them. With the narcissistic ex-husband, I had to give up being reasonable and expecting reasonable. It took a while to exorcise him from my life, but my days of taking s**t ended, and I was quick...

Sadly, she won’t talk to me at all unless a licensed counselor is in the room, a condition I welcomed and tried to make happen. We live in different parts of the country, so I don’t see her often. We spent a lot of time at my mother’s house while Dad was in hospice, but I couldn’t get any counselors...

Hello, I'm new here, but my sister's autism spectrum disorder is causing her needless pain and alienating her from the family, causing many of us distress and pain. She has a brilliant mind, is generous to a fault, and can be tremendously kind. Unfortunately, many of her traits are clearly maladapti...

Hello, I'm new to this message board, and I have to admit that I haven't lurked much to see if other's have already discussed my concerns to death. My sister has Asperger's, although I don't believe the DSM-V makes that distinction anymore, so she's on the spectrum. She's brilliant, I love her, and ...
