Aspies are notoriously poor self-assessors, though. I always thought that I was socially competent until I started college. Prior to that, my social exposure was very limited - mostly to family. It turns out that my competence was only an illusion based on the very limited demands that were placed o...

I'm the same - I won't even eat food that my family has made. It's not about contamination for me; it's just an ARFID thing. I've gotten away with it in social settings by claiming to have horrendous food allergies. Claim a similar problem and bring your own food, or ask for specific foods that you ...

IQ scores really don't mean that much at all Generally speaking, I don't agree. IQ tests are widely recognized as good indicators of cognitive ability. The value of one's full-scale IQ after averaging is more debatable, especially for those of us with developmental disorders, but scores for specifi...

I'd assumed that this was the normal labeling system. It seems to make the most sense.

Sorry you had such a bad time. Personally, I usually find it a relief to be pushed to the wayside in social groups, but if you crave that kind of interaction, maybe you could start your own group and advertise it in your area. You can publish details in the classifieds and on bulletins at nearby lib...

Different doctors have different understandings of the diagnostic labels and consequently apply them differently. Certain circumstances can also affect how they are used. A good doctor will not only have a person's current ability in mind but will also consider which label will provide an accurate d...

I won't lie - the assessment is grueling for anyone and doubly so for someone with autism. Even if you feel strongly that it's not the answer, though, a neuropsychological assessment can be very beneficial if you have functional impairments. If it isn't autism, you might come away with a different d...
