Don't twist it. It's not advice. It was a request, which he said he was ok with you declining.
As for whether you have should have declined it, that train has left the station. It does seem to be in keeping with your customary behavior. |

I'll bet that since she just transferred to a new school, she would welcome having a friend she already knows there.
If she gets wind that you are there and you do not reach out to her, what is she going to think of you then?
