Sorry to hear that your feeling lonely. To be honest I think we all do to some extent. Even people who are very comfortable flying solo. The problem with fiction is that we want to believe it....... We all struggle with our expectations of what we think life should be versus the actual reality. Your... |

I usually have a meltdown before I attend a family gathering. The pressure if social interaction is just too much and I never feel welcome.
How do I politely decline without causing offence ? |

I got a diagnosis last year at age 62. It was pretty challenging getting my head round it initially despite my suspicions but I have no regrets. It's been liberating and my mask is beginning to slip now to my relief. I'm more confident in my skin and determined to advocate for others. Its a personal... |

Its a difficult one. I've had similar experiences and tend to keep my own council now.
I feel I have to camouflage my autism to make friends and that's exhausting so I don't bother. |

I have way too much empathy. I'm always told that I'm too sensitive as many autistic people are. You can't be too sensitive and have no empathy.
Autism is only now beginning to be understood and many of the stereotypes challenged. |

Welcome Em. I was diagnosed last year at 62 and live in Scotland so too far away but I hope you get a local response soon. I am only now coming to terms with the diagnosis and it has been a roller coaster of emotions. I have consumed every scrap of information I possibly can and I am now beginning t... |

Welcome to Wrong Planet !
I was diagnosed last year at age 62 years and like you I spent most of my life "acting" to fit in. Everything I have learned about "masking" suggests that you are denying who you are so I stopped doing it. It's been an interesting and liberating journey. |

I don't know many diagnosed autistics but I have friends and family members who probably are. I also prefer introverts and quirky people. |

I finally got a diagnosis at age 62. I always felt like an alien on earth and people treated me differently. I knew I was different but tried hard to fit in. Masking was exhausting and finally took it's toll so I decided to get assessed. I avoid social gatherings and spend a lot of time alone indulg... |

It's a very welcoming place to visit and I am very grateful for the understanding here. Your right about getting a diagnosis later on in life and how it can really help to explain things. I'm 99 percent sure that my 42 year old :D daughter is autistic but she clearly doesn't want to go there. My fee... |

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share this with you as I've just outed myself to family and friends. Being vulnerable is scary but it's a HUGE relief. Getting an autism diagnosis was a huge shock even though I already knew. I think I was most shocked at how easily the psychiatrist gave me the diagno... |
