Happens to me often, particularly if the conversations are highly interesting and a lot of creative ideas are being generated. It's especially a problem when I have meetings in the evening (I'm on the board of a non-profit in a special interest area.) It takes me hours sometimes to wind down enough ...

I've read that CBT / visualisation / mindfulness and all that mumbo-jumbo are useless for autistics. We are too hyper-vigilant, self-aware and conscious of our environment. My sleep study even said I don't let down my guard when asleep. I don't go to the deepest sleep stage after REM because my bra...

I have experienced these negative effects of hyperfocus also, so I hear you. It's not a quick fix, unfortunately, but some autistic people (myself included) have found learning mindfulness meditation to be helpful with this. Separating from thoughts and letting them go is a skill that can be learned...

Yes, it definitely happens to me. In my case, it usually it starts with sensory overload (I have my highest scores in autism traits according to the Aspie Quiz in that area), especially prolonged or repeated, as opposed to a sensation that gets over quickly. I then become much more sensitive to soci...

'Overwhelm' is the term I've heard used, too.

For me, the overwhelm can be either sensory or social.

I've got a really strong time sense, to the point that I can wake up in the middle of the night from a deep sleep and know within 15-20 min what time it is, without looking at the clock. Same with elapsed time, say when I put something in the microwave, leave the room, and walk back in just before t...

Makes sense to me that our super-active brains burn a whole lot more energy than NT ones, even if our bodies are not being very active. I've always needed extra sleep!

Boredom and lack of exercise can also make a person feel tired.

I was prescribed hydroxyzine for a severe outbreak of hives (it's a very strong antihistamine) some years back. Yes, it does also have anti-anxiety effects. During the time I was on it, I definitely noticed a reduction in my perpetual background anxiety, as well as a blunting of situational anxiety....

Yes. Here are some examples: When I was a child under about age 9-10, I would run upstairs to my bedroom to hide whenever visitors came to our house, especially if they were unexpected. Much to the dismay of my family, who would explain it as "she's taking a nap" until I was too old for th...

Welcome, redqueenspawn. he he...Do people often ask you if that is "red queen's pawn" or "red queen spawn"? Mark The username is intended as a pun--you can take it either way! (The "Red Queen" of course refers to being made to run as fast as I can to stay in the same p...

Hi, I just joined for exactly the reason this thread was started! I'm 71, she/they, looking in particular to discuss aging-related issues with other elder autistics. Curious about how our types of brains experience aging, and the interface between our ways of experiencing the world and aging bodies ...
