The reason this disturbs some of us (myself included) is because cheap white noise generators don't actually play white noise; they play a short, looped recording of white noise. Those of us with enhanced pattern detection pick up on the loop very quickly, and then it becomes repetitive and irritati...

I get this, though not as badly as I used to. Used to be that crowds felt like a constantly inward pressure on my skull. Gave me migraines, visual phosphenes, and eventually would make me puke. As I got older the symptoms got less severe, so essentially I sort of lose energy in the presence of a cro...

This whole thread makes me twitch, but I highly recommend that the streetlight-snuffers in particular read the following article:

Instead of making vague and nebulous allegations regarding the offensive people, why not do the sensible thing and name some names? The people offending you may not even be aware of doing so.

How are they going to change their behavior if you don't tell them what you think they're doing wrong?

A total lack of empathy is a diagnostic criterion for antisocial personality disorder (the most recent euphemism for psychopaths and sociopaths). APD is devastating and dangerous to the individual and everyone around them. It's also almost totally untreatable. That's not an image that aspies/autisti...

I'm worried aboput what would happen if I'm 28. Would I ever get a good job? Would I ever get married or live in a decent house? Would I be capable of paying my own bills? I heard AS people are easier targets for scams, especially used car scams. They are 6 more likely to be robbed, traumatized or ...

Computers. Anything and everything to do with them. Hardware, software, doesn't matter. In particular, making them work better. I can pick up a programming language I've never seen before well enough to modify it successfully in under an hour, and have done so many times. I can sit down in front of ...

Out of 30 faces, you correctly identified 12.
You were familiar with 26 of the people in this test.

If we exclude the ones you were unfamiliar with, you got 46% correct.

Doesn't surprise me in the least.

I can't ask it back because I just can't get through the ritual right. I'm bad at the "good morning" thing too. There for a while I was trying to say it to a hand full of people when I first got in, but they've redone the office to where it's not as open, and I'm not sure if it's expected/wanted an...

I can never be sure. Especially if I see someone outside the area I normally see them. I used to do on-site computer work. It was great, because I knew everyone at every place, and remembering who was whom wasn't hard. But sometimes a client would drop by the shop to pay a bill or buy something. Whe...

While the bulbs do contain mercury, look at it this way. Even if you broke every single CFL bulb you owned at the end of its lifespan and released that mercury, you'd still be putting less mercury into the environment than if you use oldstyle incandescent lights. Reason being, the energy saving mean...

I can usually tell when a room is lit with CFLs, but it doesn't bother me. Some of them put out very natural-looking light, too. Oddly, I generally have better luck with "store brands" than with big name brands like GE. Most of the bulbs in my house are CFLs. Putting the bluer "daylight" ones in the...

"The majority is always sane." -- Nessus, in Larry Niven's 'Ringworld'. There's some truth in that statement. The majority always defines what is "normal", therefore "normal" is whatever the majority thinks is normal. So normality a sort of consensus. Anything outside of it becomes abnormal simply b...

I get this all the time as well, even in places that I'm pretty sure are deserted. Part of it is because I tend to watch people, myself, so I assume everyone else watches me back. But the rest is good old-fashioned social anxiety , which responded to Lexapro. Once I learned what it was, though, it w...
