Merrybexxmas's advice is quite good if there are certain groups of foods you dislike. You do have to be a bit careful - e.g. if you said you're allergic to mayonnaise, but at the same time had no trouble with other dairy products and other things that contain eggs, you might get caught in a lie. :) ...

This is a tough problem for me as well. I've found that the best way to approach it - and it's far from perfect, but it seems less embarrassing than the alternatives I have tried - is to tell people in advance that I'm a finnicky eater if I know that I'm going to be having dinner with them. If I une...

Truth be told, I did this sort of thing when I was a kid as well. I can't say whether it's AS-related or not; I think in my case it was curiosity about all things having to do with the opposite sex. It was a brief phase that I got through without any embarrassments (thank God). I'm a straight guy, p...

Every boyfriend is different and likes different things, so you may want to try several different things. You can run your hands through his hair, touch the side of his face, his neck, his back, etc. Try to be attentive to what he likes, even though this can be hard to detect for an Aspie. (Look for...

I don't know, maybe it's the part about atheists having no character. I'm not an atheist, but I find that sort of over-broad characterization to be a turn-off.

Aylissa, I'm sorry things have been so bad. I can only imagine how much pain you must have been in if you felt the need to end your life. I'm glad you're still with us. I hope that we can play some part in helping you come back to a place where your life feels genuinely worth living. Please PM or IM...

(Marshall - I'm writing this under the assumption that you're in the early years of a doctoral program. I'm sorry if that assumption is off-base. This is probably good advice for anyone who is starting, or thinking of starting a doctoral program in the sciences.) I'm a grad student in mathematics (a...

I'm a graduate student, working on my dissertation.

Lie groups are nice as well, but I don't know nearly as much about them as I should.

Teoka - I certainly didn't mean to imply that your situation was an easy one. It wasn't. And sometimes, when we're in a tough situation, we lose perspective and feel like the rest of the world is against us. (I'm pretty sure that's just a human trait, not an Aspie trait.) I've been in situations, as...

If you love groups, you'd love my job. My job is to study Coxeter groups (and some of their cousins, e.g. Artin groups). Non-abelian groups can be a pain, but I think they're also the real reason why we invented groups in the first place - to deal with things like permutations and functions that sim...

Teoka - I'm going to take what will probably be an unpopular stance here and say that I have to side with your teacher and your school on this one. I'm not saying that you deserved to be humiliated in front of your classmates, or that your teacher handled the situation as well as he possibly could. ...

Hi weather1man. I hope that you will stick with what seems to be your gut feeling, which is that you shouldn't end your life. The old saying "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem" is a bit simplistic - it assumes that our problems are temporary, when so often they are not - but the...

I tend to be very critical of myself, so that I'll be less devastated when other people criticize me.
