I'm currently an English teacher in Japan, but I'll soon be going back to Texas where I plan to start graduate studies in linguistics. As an undergraduate, I majored in linguistics and minored in psychology. I'm very interested in developing techniques to help severely affected individuals with auti...

I'm trying to put together a collection of profiles on all kinds of people with some form of autism spectrum disorder. I hope to increase awareness about what people with autism have in common, what they don't, and in general what it means to be autistic. My blog, The Autism Spectrum , is somewhat n...

I found my wife (who you might also call my first real girlfriend) on the Internet, and we went out without calling it a date, just "meeting". We didn't have any kind of romantic bonding going on through email. That doesn't work (in my experience at least). Halfway through our second date, I asked h...

I think you definitely can desensitize yourself, but it's a rough process. I'm working as an English conversation instructor in Japan, and it's still hard after a year. Especially with new students, I kind of panic. But compared to my speech classes in high school and college, I'm cool as a cucumber.

I think that because of the knowledge of technology and techniques, the "geek" is more aware of what is out there in the world, and this makes them more knowledgeable about the true possibilities of sabotage. It is a thief that is most paranoid about his/her belongings being stolen, even with alarm...

When I think of helping people with autism, I don't think of a cure that would make the person become average. That's ridiculous. I've always heard "average" as an insult, utterly boring with nothing much to add to society. I think more of therapies than "cures". I just want to have enough control o...

I think almost everyone can agree that some kinds of laughter are unpleasant (annoying, nauseating, or whatever). A lot of laughter sounds like crying, which is always unpleasant to hear. You're probably just a little extreme being bothered by all laughter, not totally alien.

That type of saying (the kind with some kind of advice or moral) is usually called a proverb. There's a pretty good list on Wikiquote, but I'm not allowed to put a link in my post until I make a few more. (I could be a spammer.) Maybe if I just do this... en DOT wikiquote DOT org SLASH wiki SLASH En...

I've been living in southern Japan for almost a year now with my wife (not aspie, but I wouldn't say neurotypical) and my baby (2 years old and very talkative). I'm planning on returning to Texas in a few months mostly because of family concerns (but also I really, really miss Mexican food... and go...
