Individuals don't evolve, species do You people are simply talking past each other. You are using different definitions of the same word. Evolution in the broadest sense is simply any process of formation or growth; development. The biological term is just a special case of this. There are any numb...

Is anyone into VOIP? My sister is moving away to college. We both have laptops with built-in webcams and I thought it would be nice to do video calls. I was wondering if anyone had a strong opinion of which to use. I've read some arguments on both sides, but they may be outdated. There are also lots...

Unless you're an Open Theist, I'll go ahead and say that any non-Calvinist doctrine is false because of absurd internal contradictions. Open theism? Are you referring, perhaps, to the paradox between omniscience and free will? (Does that paradox have an accepted name btw?) It's true that some conce...

It should be 30. Additionally pregnant women should be absolutely forbidden to drink alcohol. I hope you've heard of fetal alcohol syndrome. (Enough said.) Ideally I'd like to outlaw alcohol for human consumption completely (except for medicinal purposes with a doctor's prescription), but I think th...

Predestination (at least as the Calvinists define it) is a false doctrine anyway. Just because you're obligated to follow God's plan for you doesn't mean you actually will. You can fail through your own bad choices. I don't understand why there has to be a "first cause" or "initial conditions". Isn'...

However, as far as humanity is concerned, it's not renewable as the geological conditions that cause a source rock to form need to act over vast periods of time. Who needs rocks to make oil? Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_depolymerization I guess oil is a bit more renewable th...

I'm confused. What is new about this? Okay, now I'm confused. What part of this have you seen before? To actually answer your question I'll have to guess at what you mean now. VirtualBox 1.6 was released May 2. Does that still count as "new" to you or not? Do you understand the difference between t...

Look at this! http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/5333/seamlesseg9.th.png I've installed Kubuntu in Sun xVM VirtualBox running on my WindowsXP host computer in seamless mode. As you can see, the Windows and Linux taskbar/panel both appear on the same desktop and their respective windows too!

The safety issues can be addressed by pebble bed reactors. I pebble bed reactors have too many problems for me to consider them "safe." I think integral fast reactors are the way to go. (That is, unless we figure out sustainable fusion first.) IFR are about 100 more efficient than light water react...

There are several techniques. Don't expect anything you make yourself to be as efficient as what you could get out of a laboratory though. You just don't have the equipment for it. These are some techniques for making your own photovoltaics: http://scitoys.com/scitoys/scitoys/echem/echem2.html#solar...

When people talk about "64 bit OS" it's only for AMD's 64 bit processors. Core 2 Duos are not 64 bit. They're just two 32 bit chips on one die. A 64 bit OS probably won't run on a Core 2 Duo. Are you sure? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64#Intel_64 Anyway, if I do stick with 32-bit that opens up ...

The free version of AVG 8 doesn't include the rootkit scanner, active protection against hostile websites and some othe...

If Linux is an option Yes Linux is an option. It might even be preferable, since I can run it virtualized easily. I like to keep most of my software separated if at all possible. I tried running Visual C++ Express in a sandbox, but when I tried running a debugger on a hello world program I got a BS...

I use JKDefrag. It's free software and works well. It also has the option to sort files for even faster access. The outer edge of a hard disk can be read much faster than the inside.
