Earthbound and Chrono trigger have excellent music. I have to mention The Japan-only earthbound sequel (mother 3) for having perhaps the best music of any game although it is certainly not "old school".

The entire Mother/Earthbound series.
I just got Mother 3 (earthbound sequel) and it is incredible. It is only available in japanese, though.
There is a website that has the translation for literally all of the text in the game, so it is playable.
