It is about a week until the end of the year. I never know what is expected at events like this one, and it is SO HARD to go. I hate to appear antisocial, but I have nothing to say to people whom I do not already know. Why do people talk to people at events like this one, when they don't already kno... |

My daughter is in elementary school- 4th grade. This week they are having an evening event in her class. After the event, the class is going to a restaurant together, students and parents. I don't understand what the purpose of going to the restaurant is, or what is expected of people while they are... |

This is what I do/have done. My daughter is also frequently tardy do to a.m. meltdowns and sensory issues (she CAN'T just make do with the first pair of socks out of the drawer. She MUST try several pair on to see if they are the right texture. Also, if she gets out of sequence in her a.m. routine, ... |

Thanks for this thread. Daughter is melting down much more, raging much more. I had heard that rages sometimes increase in fequesncy, intensity and duration in HFA girls as they go through puberty. D.D. is alreay growing some hair under her arms and wears a bra-- and is not fat-- so I am wondering i... |

I head tilt. I didn't know that was a stereotypic behavior. My husband claps hands at midline and used to beat his chest all day long. He has stopped the chest beating. Does that sound more like Asperger's or HFA? We haven't got formally dx'ed although a family therapist casually referred to our Asp... |

I don't understand why she started crying and why her dad had to comfort her. It couldn't have been because you moved your stuff. Also, you said something to the effect that kids who know their parents from birth accept them for who they are. Well, I can TELL you are not a parent yet! LOL! I can und... |

What worked for us was that I started teaching explicitly that each person has a right to talk. Therefore, we need to take turns. We trained our kids to WATCH and LISTEN before talking. It took MONTHS AND MONTHS of daily teaching, over and over and over, to get them to WATCH to see if their potentia... |

I think the root of the angst with this is that parents are worried about being accused by friends and family of "causing" their child's autism by having a history of mental illness. I know that the researchers were saying that this research will help direct future research into heritable forms of a... |

They aren't actually friends. They are just people who are acquainted with me through various groups my kids belong to-- school, church, extra curricular activities, etc. |

Sometimes when I am trying not to be intrusive or rude and I just leave, later they say, "Why didn't you say good-bye? You hurt my feelings." or "People were wondering why you just left like that." Other times, I have tried to stand near the people to wait for a pause in the conversation to say good... |

But the people in the group are milling about talking. They are involved with each other. It seems that
sometimes people interrupt to say goodbye and sometimes they don't. AGH! |

Just so ya know- I'm in therapy, and have been in therapy for a few years. It is just hard because my husband is very isolating from the family, won't go to therapy. My son is explosive and always has been. For both of them it is a part of the whole ASD thing. We are all on the spectrum and that's j... |

When there is a group of people gathered in a public place, milling around and making small talk sometimes people say good-bye to group members before leaving and sometimes they just leave. In fact, the same person will say good-bye to some members and not to others, even though they seem to have sp... |
