You might be surprised at how many applications you can easily install from Ubuntu's repositories... WiFi: Ubuntu's networking was alot easier to use than Windows, all I had to do was click my network and type in my network key, drivers were already installed OpenOffice: Has always been Linux compat...

Oops, I guess I forgot to restart the git daemon, so it should work now. =removed package links= OK, so you're right about the hacked together spaghetti code, but I like being able to fully optimize things. PHP has several frameworks that use MVC but I find these frameworks always slow things down (...

When I play video in full-screen the framerate is quite slow and there are alot of black frames sometimes, when playing a DVD in full screen it is not watchable. I don't think the ATI Catalyst drivers are great on Linux, in Windows I never have these problems.. I've tried several video players too, ...

XP has a lot of unnecessary services and features, the performance gets much better when you disable the extra services and effects, etc. Windows 98 still gets much better performance than Windows 2000 last time I tried it. Wondering what you need from Windows that Linux (Ubuntu?) doesn't offer? All...

Have you tried Python, Java, C#, or Ruby? PHP is not such a great language (even if many, many people have made do with it). I've tried Python and Ruby, didn't see any benefit to switching. Java and C# I've looked through before and didn't really like either of them (C# is Microsoft only? yuck). I ...

I think that all 3 are in a simulation. Physics tells me that all matter/energy is made up of "information in space", that the only reason I consider something to exist is my perception of information (light,sound,touch..). In order to know how my environment was created, I would need to be able to ...

Software requirements usually refer to your system, so when an anti-virus says that it requires 128 MB of RAM, it means that if you have less than a total of 128 MB in your system your computer might be unusable with the antivirus running. Most systems will start using the hard-drive as extra RAM wh...

Thanks for the feedback. Take a look in style.css , the examples in there can be easily changed and effect the whole site at once. I tried to make it straightforward but it's still a bit of a mess (CSS/design just isn't my thing, I based style.css on a template).

For most users, there's no need to use a command prompt because everything they want to do can be done by clicking.. But when it comes to server administration, do you really want to run a window system on a machine that is dedicated to serving web pages or managing emails? (processing/RAM/disk is u...

I used to use Apache all the time, but now prefer lighttpd. I'm renting a virtual Archlinux server in the US and that's where everything runs from.

These people normally messed up their systems graphically just fine  It reminds me of this fun-picture where an alias for the loopback device has to be created and it's one command under various Unices and a huge wall of text in Windows ;) haha nice! I guess we know why they call it Windows NT

Well it's not like those memory sticks are supposed to be disposable. You should look for a "format" option in the camera menu or try this that I found: Connect the memory card to the Mac, launch Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities, choose the memory card from the left hand column, click on t...

I work in an IT Helpdesk and most users can't figure out the simplest of GUIs and some even seem afraid of their right-click button on their mouse. The more someone becomes familiar with something, the more they can do in it, so I think these people just don't have as much practice. So I don't think...

I'm pretty sure the new card would be compatible, but I don't have a camera with the type so I can't say for sure. Have you tried formatting the card from Windows? With camera connected, go to My Computer and right click the drive for your camera, and choose "Format" and hit Start. There is probably...

I don't see too much discussion on the topic, but building web applications is a major obsession of mine. Have been interested in programming since Q-basic, there I had a few HTML/JavaScript/Perl years, and more recently I discovered the power of PHP/MySQL and Linux. So I run a couple web servers no...

I got a CD cleaning kit from a local store and managed to save some of my favourite CDs. It came with 2 sets of wet wipes, one that takes off the protective layer under the CD and the other one puts a new protective layer. Usually scratches don't go further than the protective layer, so it works gre...
