Welcome to Wrong Planet! I am an adult with Asperger's, I teach sensory integration to people on the spectrum, and I am in training to become an OT. I am also an autism consultant and do workshops, trainings, and lectures for schools. Your reading of this situation is correct. The only thing that th...

Body Integrity Identity Disorder sounds like it might be related to phantom limb syndrome, where the patient experiences that they still have a limb, even though it has been amputated. Phantom limb syndrome is caused by cross wiring in the somatosensory cortex, leading the patient to "feel" their am...

The dirty little secret about bullying is that authority figures often see people who commit acts of agression as powerful and the victims of that agression as weak and worthless. In psychology, this is called the "just world phenomenon." People tend to believe that those who get attacked deserve to...

I used to be bullied by my classmates in school. Now as an adult I've been bullied by several bosses and coworkers. I don't think the bullying ever stops, it just changes subject matter. I had one boss threaten to fire me because I had stayed late at the office several times due to the fact that cou...

If my teachers in school had followed your suggestion of calling kids on manipulative behavior instead of pretending not to notice it, my childhood would have been much less traumatic. I was physically abused by my peers on only a few occasions (punched, slapped, kicked), but I was emotionally and p...

My boyfriend and I are both aspies, and we've both just moved from Amherst, MA (a small town) to Pittsburgh, PA (a mid-sized city). So far, not including the stress of moving, living in Pittsburgh is much less stressful than living in Amherst. Amherst is a small, insular town with no jobs, high cost...

For the past year, I've worked as a respite care provider for kids and teens on the spectrum. A respite provider is kind of like a babysitter, except that I have more responsibilities (for example, one of the children I babysit for has a feeding tube in her stomach, and I have learned how to replace...

Hi TiffOfDoom: A) I think my sense of humor is pretty good, but most people find it too esoteric to be understood. However, my boyfriend who also has AS has a very funny, and very topical, sense of humor. B) Good verbal communication, not so good non-verbal communication, though I've spent so much t...

I have Asperger's, and I am getting my masters in occupational therapy for exactly this reason -- I strongly believe that people on the autism spectrum are better served by others on the spectrum than by NTs who do not share their experience and cannot truly understand their needs. I currently work ...

My boyfriend has synesthesia (he's also AS) -- he sees patterns of light when he hears sounds. Loud sounds create bright flashes of light for him, and some high pitched frequencies are actually blinding -- they create a sort of white static over his visual field. This has been useful when he's worke...
