Do you have access to a mobile device of some sort which has a text-to-speech function? If it is easier to write out some general-purpose information (for example, explaining about meltdowns/shutdowns as a neuro issue, and you need the following things from people around you...) then get your device... |

Rats actually make really good pets for a lot of people. The girls don't smell (if you keep their house clean, of course - cleaning out one a week is usually enough) and they are very friendly. Also they are much less likely to bite than hamsters are - most rats will push you away with their paws ra... |

I have the "Pulse" variant of this as part of my note-taking accommodations. It is quite useful, the best bit being the digital copy of notes (as mentioned earlier) and being able to convert my somewhat illegible handwriting to text form. This enables other people to actually read my notes. The audi... |

There is also a free resource:
www.bullyonline.org
which gives information on mainly work-related bullying and how it can be dealt with.
Hope this may be of use to some folks. |

Yup, happens to me too. One of the specific accommodations I have is written instructions for tasks. There is still one member of staff who is somewhat resistant about this, but all the others are fine, getting used to the idea. Sometimes if you have any sort of label that means you have issues with... |

Hi there, Does your University have a Student Support Service for the academic side of things? (most do...) Often you can access this support without any labelling required at all, and they can give you help with getting the information down on paper whilst avoiding the plagiarism trap. If you're no... |

I tried to explain to someone how I think, and they got confused.... It's a bit like a 4-dimensional spider diagram, composed of words, pictures, "video clips" and associations, linking separate "bits" together. It's hard to explain it just using language. It's different from thinking purely in spee... |

Yup, my views are universally considered to be weird.
I have this strange idea that people should try to be nice to each other (or at least reasonable) wherever possible. No-one seems able to grasp the premise behind this.... |

Most pubs and bars offer some non-alcoholic drinks (for designated drivers, those who don't drink, etc.). As someone who doesn't drink alcohol at all, I have never found it an issue on my travels. Usual options are orange or other fruit juice, lemonade, cola, iced tea, sometimes tea or coffee. If yo... |

Hmm... Despite all the recent fuss about people only just realising we exist, adults with AS are a low priority. As has already been pointed out, it is false economy to refuse services on the grounds that we have survived so far, therefore we must not need any help. However, refusing this in the sho... |

The University want to set up a screening programme, because there are a few of us with "informal" Dx, but in the mean time, they are considering paying for private assessment just to get the label on record. I don't know how sucessful that will be... |

I'm currently based in Middlesbrough.
Still trying to find somewhere in the area that will do the testing - the University want to sort out screening for us, but that shouldn't be necessary. |

Yup, that's just happened to me too. I got the referral from the GP, but then nothing happened. Apparently, the unit was getting so many referrals from the area that instead of actually dealing with them, it shut! I'm now having to hunt around for somewhere that will do an assessment privately, whic... |

As someone who hates loud noises, crowded places etc. and is allergic to drunken idiots (it has been decided!), if you feel you must go to an event like this, wear ear-plugs! Having been dragged to such an occasion within the last 48 hours, I can testify that they make a huge difference. It means th... |

An effective response to the "F... you" (or "him" or "them" or "it"..... or whatever...) is
"Metaphorically, metaphysically or literally?"
It usually raises a smile, or a look of total incomprehension... Either is good! |
