I too have learnt the hard way to think before I talk, and thoroughly study the reactions of those around me. Now, when I'm older, I can act almost-spontaneously even in the most chaotic social settings, but I still weigh my words and study/ponder people thoroughly.

I am male, and "cuddly". If I saw my GF upset, the first thing that would come to my mind was to hug her and share her pain. This is a very, very strong instinct i assume almost on par with caring for your child (to give a female example). A "normal" person would most probably stop with the away-pus...

It may also be that her mother just blurted out what she felt without thinking too much about the exact definition. Highly emotional people have a tendency to do that.

It might be a case of you being unable to put their views of you in the correct perspective, or you being unable to emphasize with the way they think. Why don't you elaborate on (eg., tell us about) the situation(s) where people have treated you as a criminal? :)
