You sound like mild but definite PDD now, at this point in your life. Me: childhood challenges -head banged (cyclically, hour + daily when at the right point in the cycle) -scratched myself until I bled. (often) -obsessed with child development and education. (everyday) -had repetitive hand movement... |

Yes they can. Even the more mild ones don't have a problem with socializing. I bought a book on body language which helps me understand it. I seem to be doing a lot better socially, but like someone earlier said I can't do it for long periods. Ugh, body language. I can usually pick up when it's bei... |

I have learned enough social skills to get by for brief periods of time in small groups, and to connect with a few people under certain circumstances. So yes, but. |

I am a moderate-severe Aspie, but I'm going to be re-d'xed as HFA (or least severely affected, or whatever the new term is going to be) when the new DSM comes out. I am heavily medicated, use lists to remind me how to take showers and perform other routines, and have difficulty speaking in non-acade... |

I had a friend who pointed out that if I can get 3% of the people I meet to like me, I will have more fans than I'll know what to do with!
It's helped. |

i am sorry i am not in the spirit of the thread but: my psych(iatrist/ologist) discussed with me, the basic attributes of the "levels of intelligence" when i was young, and i remember her descriptions. she started at "genius" she said genius was when someone knew without any external tuition, a com... |

I don't know if I'd count it as a special interest, although I voted that way, but infiltration of certain social groups was a big puzzle for me in high school, and remains so whenever I see said people. How people work is also a big interest of mine. And I got some friends out of the bargain. I als... |

I work with Intellectually Disabled kids and adults. I use the term Intellectual Disabilities because it's more accurate, as far as I can tell--none of my students have ever seemed just "slow"--and because it doesn't have the baggage that comes with "ret*d". That word is hard for me to even type. Th... |

I get doubtful of myself. I feel like a fraud, like I'm not Autistic enough. Which is ridiculous. Because I've been diagnosed twice, five years apart, and I meet the criteria for Autistic Disorder, and as a child was virtually identical to Kranner's patients, andandand just because I can talk and wa... |

The problem is, we don't live in an ideal world; if a cure were available, people who didn't want it would be pressured into it, and most parents would cure their autistic children as a matter of course (and failing to do so would probably be seen as a form of child abuse). So by all means, look fo... |

If a cure for autism is ever found, it won't just clear up autism. It will do MUCH more than anyone suspects. Repair the myelin sheath on nerves. Clear up timing issues between brain areas. Replace/repair/activate mirror neurons. "Correct" any other "abnormal" brain structures. In short, a Super Br... |

I've seen both sides argued here, and I'm interested in seeing it all hashed out in one place. Obviously, some traits between classic autism and AS are different. Some people have visual-spatial strengths, others weaknesses. Some have sensory processing problems, some don't. Some have nonverbal lear... |

I don't know if you all realize this, but Crassus seems to speak mostly in metaphor. I don' think he was providing us with a literal etymology, but rather giving us, if this makes any sense, a statistical definition. It didn't really bother me. |

I think AS is NLD with sensory issues and special interests and, in some cases, visual-spatial strengths. I think NLD and SPD are present in almost every autist. |
