Empathy (to know how someone is feeling) is directly proportional to ToM, so of course there would be a wide range of ability to do this in the aspie community. Compassion (to feel for another with passion) is easily within the range of aspies (although we are all different). That said, many aspies... |

Welcome "themainmeal"! I hear you about the mental gymnastics. For me, raising children is a piece of cake--including both my (presumably) NT daughter (though she's only 5) and AS son (age 8). I don't have any issues with either of them. But, for my wife, our AS son is a holy terror. She can't seem ... |

In other words, more or less the same as NT sexuality in that everyone of us is different! That's not surprising. It goes to the adage that, "if you've met one aspie... you've met one aspie." Imagine if there was an article on "NT sexuality" that was as short and as narrow as the one quoted? It wou... |

Does anyone know how new forums get created? I've only been on here a few months. But, there are a lot of really smart people here who I believe could make a very significant difference to the AS/autism community in general if the effort were directed towards a few areas that, thus far, seem to have... |

(almost) back on-topic. Yes, there are doubts about vast swathes if the autism research at the moment. You make some very good points, No_Exit. It seems to me that many researchers in this field seem to do research that proves what they believed in the first place. There is little rigor when even a... |

Seems to me that the "Search for the Neurological Basis of Autism/Aspergers" is in about the same position that the Spanish Conquistadors were at while searching South America for the Cities of Gold :? Have we not found them yet because we haven't searched hard enough? Or have we just not looked in... |

Well, I don't want to name names per se, because the misinterpretations seem so widespread. Also, many of the studeis themselves appear to be badly flawed. Some really high level somewhat random examples include: 1. Studies that conclude people with more severe AD have lower IQs. The problem with th... |

Until reading the "professional" interpretations of empirical reseach on AS, AD, HFD, etc., I had never in my life seen so many incredibly inept, no... make that... horrendous... ... |

Many still do. I've been seeing a therapist who is blaming my AS issues on the relationship with my mother and ignoring reality. I'm quitting today. Yikes. I'd quit too! I've been fortunate to find a good therapist who understands AS. What I think is really important is that she understands our str... |

MRI Study Finds Only Small Increase in Mild Abnormalities; Not Consistantly: MRIs of 28 Asperger children and adults were compared to 23 controls. Mild inconsistent alterations were detected in 13/28 of the individuals with Asperger Syndrome compared to 6/23 controls. Maybe 15 of the Aspies were mi... |

As a pragmatic example of persistence/perserverence, I remember now that in my first semester in the PhD program I struggled quite a bit. I felt I was actually at risk of failing for the first time in years. But, this time I resolved to work my butt off and not to quit the program. The only way I wo... |

Things are tough for me right now. After failing community college for two consecutive semesters in a row, I have lost all credibility with my father; as far as he is concerned, I'm just a "handicapped person who cannot be counted on for anything". Man. This sounds like me at age 20. I flunked the ... |

I should add that I see no reason to defer to such an obviously flawed criterion as that in the DSM. While those who are less mathematically inclined benefit from the simplicity imposed by a discrete Spectrum with a few "official" diagnoses, in reality it seems highly improbable that the symptoms ac... |

I guess it also depends on how you define "spectrum." In the case of Autism Spectrum Disorder, "spectrum" is meant to modify disorder, and not disorder modifying autism spectrum. Or like this: Autism SpectrumDisorder and not AutismSpectrum Disorder By this definition, the spectrum means one of the ... |

Just don't sell yourself short yet. It could take many years... Until recently I would have said that I had little chance of a long-term relationship and that my wife and I were headed for a certain divorce. But, I think the AS diagnosis may be the key to allowing my us to finally begin to understan... |
