Hi everyone, My name is Emily Le Coz (AKA Mom_of_Lucas). I chair a nonprofit agency called the Autism Center of Tupelo. Based in Tupelo, Mississippi, we provide FREE one-on-one ABA therapy and early intervention to children with autism. We are the only center of its kind in our region, where an esti...

Hi and welcome to the forum! Your son sounds like mine. In fact, mine will turn 3 in late August and is just now starting to string words together. But he's smart and sweet. We're also starting him in a special elementary-school program soon. We live in Mississippi. We realized Lucas was on the spec...

Great question! My son hummed and sang more than he babbled. When he did babble, it was usually just the same vowel consonants over and over again (not a lot of variety). He didn't start using words until 2 years, 1 month. And he just recently started stringing words together (he's 2 years 10 months...

That's funny, leechbabe! It reminds me of a situation my mom told me about. When us kids were young, my mom would exchange babysitting with a group of women. One day she was keeping a little girl whose mom never wore makeup. Shortly before the girl's mother came to get her, my mom started putt...

Hi BDS. Welcome to Wrong Planet. I'm really sorry to hear about your situation right now. I think to a certain degree, all teenagers have it rough. It's just a weird time in life - not a kid, not an adult, not sure who you are, seeking independence but craving parental approval. Argh! I remember my ...

In that sense, I've found that even associating with the traditional "mother's groups" for babies and parents groups for school can sometimes be detrimental. Yeah, my mother-in-law suggested I bring a squirt bottle full of water to the store next time, and when Lucas throws a fit I should spritz hi...

Wow. Thanks for the great explanations.

AspieCard - Lucas also does love trains and running water. I never realized they were all connected. Interesting!

I'm NT but my son (who is almost 3) is on the spectrum. His biggest fascination is doors, and my husband and I fail to see why he finds them so entertaining. Lucas can talk, but he's not yet conversational, so we can't ask him why he likes doors so much. I'm wondering if there are others out there o...

Welcome to WP, Tysmommy. Having never met your son, I can't offer any clues into his behavior. I can only describe what happened to me as a child when I was about your son's age. I do not have autism and am a pretty normal person (college educated, professional, etc.) but I also accidentally killed ...

Yes, the direct trigger may be the strawberries, but would he be that way about the strawberries in a different situation? Most likely the REASON he has no patience for not getting what he wants is that he is overloaded to start with. You are SO right, DW_a_mom! I hadn't considered that. When Lucas...

Kuroshokora: I just took that same test today after seeing the link. My son (who is almost 3) has either aspergers or high-functioning autism. I thought maybe I might have some traits since there's a usually a genetic link. I didn't save my graphic, but it was way over on the neurotypical side, so I...

DW_a_mom: Yes, his most frequent meltdowns happen in the grocery store or mall. It also occurred quite frequently during a recent "vacation" to Santa Monica. (Note the "" on vacation). I discussed the sensory overload theory with my husband, but he was skeptical and I'm not sure either. This is beca...

I found this forum a couple weeks ago and have visited several times daily since then. I guess I got so wrapped up in the good threads on the parent's portion of this site that I neglected to formally introduce myself. My name is Emily. I was born and raised in Wisconsin but currently living in Miss...

Could you visit the schools and staff in the districts you will choose from? Being there in person might give you a better sense of which will work best for your son. Just a thought.
