My wife and I somehow managed five years of Music Together with our AS son without him participating in the group. (Exception: when he was a baby and couldn't get away.) He'd just sit and spin in the corner or hide under the table while I and the other adults and kids would sit in a circle and sing ...

My bike tire blew last night on my commute home from work, making me an hour late. I was ranting and raving while trying to fix the tire on our front porch, and I slipped and gouged my face with a tire-repair tool. My son (AS, 8-y-o) said, "I'll help," ran in and got an ice pack, then brought it to ...

We got help form a CBT therapist who used cognitive restructuring to help our then-5-y-o AS son with a fear of dogs that had started generalizing. She was able to help him adjust his (pretty rigid) belief that all dogs were dangerous. After that we were able to help him learn appropriate behavior wi...

Our son has asked questions about death, change, other "ultimate" concerns since he was about 4. Once, around age 5, he asked what would happen when he died. My wife (the atheist) told him his body would turn back into air and water and dirt but that he'd be remembered by many people. I (the Christi...

Do you feel like your son is getting enough help and support? It sounds like, with the exception of a few areas, both you and his teachers seem to think he's doing ok. Maybe consider making a list of the things where he does struggle, asking the school psych/counselor/special ed team what they think...

Wow - what a great discussion! Do I like Scotty the way he is? Absolutely! I had a (former) friend project grief and stress and all sorts of life trauma onto me based on her perception of my son. She was actually somewhat put out when I told her that I love and enjoy everything about him, but that I...

Oliver Sacks, in his book "Musicophilia," discusses this phenomenon. It seems to be uncommon, but he doesn't reference any relationship to schizophrenia. Just more variety in human neural functioning!

I've clearly found the right place to bring this up. Thanks for all your thoughts and stories! Your words confirm my own instincts, that places where diversity and tolerance are manifest in concrete actions and not just mission statements are likely to be welcoming to aspie families as well. Folks w...

I'm new here. This seemed like a thoughtful, compassionate place to bring this up. We had to leave our last spiritual community for several reasons, but the main one is that my aspie son (age 7) had trouble participating in the gathering and was acting as "a negative influence" on one family's 3-yea...
