Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Where do we lie on the Social Totum Poll?

I like to believe I'm somewhere in the middle of the pole. I can talk to people, but I prefer keeping to myself.

In reality? I'm a teenaged girl who doesn't care about fashion/bands/hot guys/etc., so I'm not on the totem pole at all. At most I'm on the low end of it I guess.

Once there is a trigger, which is most often being yelled at for being "rude" when I thought I was being perfectly polite, I can feel the meltdown coming on through these signs: 1. Fast breathing, gasping for air 2. Everything becoming much louder and brighter 3. Tears welling up, which just makes 1...

I see things in "shades", good things automatically have a "brightness" to them and things I don't like are "dark". Sometimes it's a little weird, like when I'm pressing arrow keys in a game and suddenly one of them goes "dark" and I don't like to touch that key anymore because it doesn't feel corre...

Because no one here has even heard of AS, unless they've read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time or House Rules. And based on the traits displayed by the characters with AS in those books, I'm very mild. I don't scream when touched, I can make fleeting eye contact (after much effort),...

School is burning me out. I'm slipping away, losing all the progress in interaction that I've made, returning to my own little bubble in the world where reality and dreams are the same thing. I wake up exhausted although I get 7 hours of sleep (5 is the average for most people) and I've lost interes...

Sometimes I find myself actually "predicting things". I don't really know that I'm doing it until it happens, then I realize that my actions before the thing happens affects the results. For example, before a test/exam, I occasionally find myself inclined to put more effort into a certain topic. I d...

My mum teaches people how to communicate effectively, so she kept reminding me to "make eye contact" and "don't interrupt someone when they're speaking". It definitely helped a bit although I still don't like eye contact and occasionally interrupt people. But my ramblings about things (continuously ...

-7. I need to scream and cry but I can't, so I'm overstressed.

I hate school. I envy people in the US because they have IEPs, but if I were to be diagnosed with AS I doubt I'll get any help. Probably I'll get kicked out of my "elite" school for having a developmental disability. Although I know that a diagnosis will not help me in any way, I still want to know....

Literature and Geometry are terrible. I can deal with algebra now after a lot of practice, but the visual aspect of geometry is just murder to me and if I don't understand something, I take it literally, which means I often come close to failing literature because I can't see the deeper meaning.

Your Aspie traits are showing.

Make them stop showing so you can have a peaceful life

Also stop procrastinating because you have important tests coming up in the next month

I'm self-dxed because: 1. It's next to impossible for me to go and see a specialist on my own because I'm 15 2. My parents don't know what an ASD is and I am often scolded for having Aspie traits 3. I can lie to people straight in the face because I don't make eye contact, so I can lie to my parents...

I'm 15, and my parents never supported me in school. I worked my non-existent tail off and didn't get rewarded, got good grades and got scolded because they weren't good enough, so I lost a lot of motivation. I now motivate myself by convincing myself that if I do well at school, I have a better sho...

Pretty accurate description of me up until the second last paragraph (the one about woman/daughter). I've never felt compelled to start a family when I'm older and I refuse to conform to society's expectations in this aspect. However, in school, I've learnt how to be a chameleon. It takes me time to...

I have been forced into helping to host some visitors for an event being held in my school. Part of my (compulsory) after-school activity. I'm particularly worried although I did this last year for these reasons: (I could handle it last year because it was only 1.5 hours long) 1. It's on a Sunday, f...
