I have the same problem. Just say 'no thanks', don't give them any reasons or information, because they'll then just try to overcome them to make you do what they want. Partially related incident, or maybe just a related story in public. Though it's not quite the same perspective... My 11 year old's obsession is all things weather. Luckily.
