I've never felt like part of the human race, and I realised a few years ago that it is because I don't feel an innate human to human connection with other people that I can't see myself as human. I'm ok with that now, although I wasn't always ok with it. For too long I felt defective, I felt too abn... |

I have suffered from 'Selective Mutism' as it is called since early childhood, and I do not use the word 'suffering' lightly here. It is a very misunderstood condition, even among mental health professionals. It is definitely not a choice not to speak to certain people and in certain situations. It ... |

What are your interests, besides playing video games? I wonder if there are any adult education courses in your area that might interest you? If you are receiving benefits you should be able to do them at a reduced cost. I've been to a lot of these courses over the years, most of them are just for a... |

As a young child I had a 'colour order', that is I ordered colours in the same way that numbers or letters of the alphabet are ordered. Not sure how I came up with this particular order of colours, I think perhaps I started with my least favourite colour at the time and finished with my then favouri... |

I first came across a mention of Asperger Syndrome on the problem page of a magazine just before I turned 40. It said that people with AS have difficulty communicating and forming relationships and I immediately thought 'that sounds like me!' That was the main issue that had taken me into counsellin... |

If I had been asked that question 25 years or so ago, (although I didn't know I had Asperger's then) I probably would have jumped at the chance to be 'normalised'. But I would not want that now. I don't seek to be 'normal', my aim now is not to become somebody I am not, my aim is to become the perso... |

I'd just like to add, never say to your child "I love you but ..." It was often said to me and I think it is one of the most unkind things you can say to somebody. At the same time you're saying you love them you are telling them that they're not acceptable to you as they are. It instilled... |

Don't on any account accept your child being teased or bullied by the other children because of their differences/difficulties. I was picked on pretty much throughout school and a lot of the time I suffered in silence because I was ashamed. As I got older I never told any adults, because I thought i... |

I can't imagine not talking to myself. To me it feels like a very natural thing to do. It helps me to clarify my thoughts and I have conversations with myself all the time. I also talk myself through tasks I need to do and I kind of rehearse talking to other people, practice what I want to say to th... |

I don't mind seeing myself in a mirror when I'm alone in my bedroom or bathroom, I don't look too bad then. But I hate seeing myself in photos, I think I look quite different then. Then I am seeing myself as the outside world sees me, and that really hurts. In photos I think I just look weird and to... |

I hope I can offer some insight here. I have suffered from Selective Mutism all my life, ever since I can remember. I am getting better, but it is something I shall probably always have to some extent. I experience it as a kind of phobia of speaking, a fear of the sound of my own voice. I can only s... |

It doesn't happen any more, but even when I was in my late 20's/early 30's I used to get mistaken for a child because I am small. I also have long, unstyled hair, don't wear make up and back then I used to dress quite young. Strangers, people who came knocking door to door used to ask me "Is your mu... |

I just thought I was mentally ill, that somewhere along the way I had got incredibly messed up psychologically but I couldn't see how. At one time I considered the possibility that something awful might have happened in my past when I was too young to remember it and that had somehow made me the way... |

It isn't that I don't want to be human, but I've just never been able to feel like part of the human race. Human-like in a lot of ways yes, but never fully human. I have always felt so out of place amongst and so alienated from other people. I didn't believe that I was really human and felt confused... |

I love things that I remember from my childhood but that you hardy ever see nowdays. So, for an aspie to have a special interest in a person, does it have to involve stalking? No, it doesn't have to involve stalking at all. Throughout my life certain other people have been my special interests, it has been different people at different times but there has nearly always been someone... |
