I feel very stuck right now. I have a huge fear of change and trying anything new. I am very socially isolated. I don't know whether my fear of change is directly related to my Asperger's syndrome or other mental health issues (I was diagnosed with Asperger's in my early 40s after a long history of ... |

@ Laconvivencia: I didn't mean to blaspheme  Seriously though, I don't 'get' celebrity culture. Many female celebrities are admired because of their physical appearance. I'm far more interested in people's brains and personality :) I love Prof Brian Cox (particle physicist), who in the UK some... |

Maybe it would help, initially, to try to determine why you feel self-hatred? What is it about yourself that you dislike? Is there anything you can do to help you like yourself better? |

I was diagnosed at age 43. Throughout my life I had been given diagnoses of 'giftedness', OCD, anorexia nervosa, depression, social anxiety... As a young child I had OCD-like symptoms, many phobias and fear of change. When I was 12 I became depressed and started to control my food intake in a very o... |

I found the book quite interesting, but I think that Baron-Cohen has a rather fixed idea of Asperger's syndrome. Not everyone with Asperger's syndrome (AS) is the same. There is a group of autistic traits and people with AS express these traits to varying degrees. Some people with AS find understand... |

I read the book over the weekend. Simon Baron Cohen is actually rather kind to people with autism and Asperger's syndrome in this book. He describes us as 'hyper-moral'. I am not too sure that we have 'zero empathy', as he suggests, but he is in no way suggesting that people with autism are in any w... |

This is complicated. I do want friends and have a few close friends who I occasionally see and quite regularly talk to on the phone or through the internet. I would feel 'empty' if I didn't have friends. However, I don't like going out much - unless I am going somewhere familiar and doing something ... |

This question has probably been asked and answered before, but can anyone explain WHY eye contact is difficult for them? Like others that have answered this post I find my eyes dart everywhere when I'm in conversation with someone and I get distracted by all the information. But right from being a s... |

I had anorexia nervosa for many years. It wasn't about body image at all. I actually started to over-exercise because of anxiety (exercise is super-stimming for some Aspies) and found that I became very obsessive about exercising in a particular way at certain times of the day. I then began to count... |

I understand perfectly what you are saying. I find social situations difficult and exhausting too, and I spend a lot of time alone. I do not mind spending time alone and am very independent, but sometimes I feel lonely and as if I am 'missing out' on life. I didn't go anywhere at Christmas or New Ye... |

I'm glad you brought this topic up... I have very strong feelings (of distress) when I see other people in pain, bullied etc. I can certainly see that they are distressed and I also feel distressed. I hate it when people with autism are said to lack empathy. The main problem I have is with expressin... |

Spokane_Girl - thanks for the reply. I'm sorry you lost your baby  I am aware that it has been suggested that 'Anorexia is the female Asperger's' - but I don't think that's accurate. I know many people with anorexia nervosa and few of them have Asperger's syndrome or other ASDs. Starvation and ... |

I can identify with this - A LOT. I find close contact really difficult. I find eye contact more difficult the closer I get to a person and the more clearly I can see their facial features. I then worry if people think I am being rude because I have to look away and become absorbed with (e.g.) the p... |
