My daughter just turned 10 and I know we need to talk about periods and puberty and stuff. I just don't know how to approach it. She is very technical and medically minded and she has a vague idea I think but then some things just really throw me. A couple weeks ago she asked me " why do people have...

I am an NT mom with an AS daughter, a NT son, and NT daughter. I understand where you are coming from. I always dreamed of being like my mom. The cool mom that everyone wanted to hang out at my house. My AS daughter is 10 and the other two are 5 and 2 respectively. I feel bad sometimes that I don't ...

My as daughter doesn't drink enough and my NT son drinks constantly. I think some kids just have different preferences. As for the bedwetting we had the same problem with my daughter up until she was almost 9 years old. Nothing we did worked until she started sensory therapy. we started brushing her...

How old is your son? My daughter went through a phase where first it was bugs coming out of the receptacles - we had to put something i nfront of every receptacle in the room to get her to sleep at night. After the bugs there were skeletons on the wall. Luckily when we moved the "skeletons" stayed a...

Well, after 4yrs of fighting for a diagnosis we finally got it. We also finally got a teacher who cares. My DD is 10 and in 4th grade. Her teacher thinks she is a wonderful, gifted child and loves having her as a part of her class. She has tried asking the school counselor (big joke! another post!) ...

I know my 9 year old doesn't mean to be lying and I'm not sure I'd really classify it as lying either. It's just what is said and how it is processed are so different. I really don't know what to do about it. :( For example we just had the following exchange between me, her, and a friend: Maggie: D-...

We have never really said to my 8 yo that "you have ..." We used practical examples to help her understand why. Things like. You want to ride and bike and its hard, well the OT will help you so you can have an easier time learning how to ride the bike. You get frustrated by misunderstanding, the ST ...

I was referred to a speech pathologist, because, while specializing in speech issues, they must have knowledge of how the brain functions, or doesn't in some cases, and how that effects motor skills and behavior. You were fortunate to find a very good pathologist! My daughter's discovered the pragma...

I wouldn't wait until the doctor's appt. That is way too long. Have you told the doctor of the suicide threats? If so and he hasn't seen you ASAP then I think you need to find a new doctor. In the meantime get him somewhere now. Take him to the ER or a mental health intake. Call a hotline for suppor...

I would recommend Brain Gym and would also recommend that your children see a neuro-educator or a speech pathologist, because they are trained in sensory integration disfunction and can get your granddaughter the referrals she needs. An Occupational Therapist is the person who is most likely to diag...

Food allergies can have drastic results on behavior. My son has food allergies(FA). A small amount of his allergen and he is a terror for days sometimes! I hope your allergist is having you avoid peanut also. That is a very serious one. M son can go from no reaction to anaphalaxis and back to no rea...

We homeschooled last year because they would rather have let her be put in remedial classes rather than spend some extra time on a few concepts. (Long story) And the school was not accepting of her or willing to help. The problem we ran into last year though was that she did not deal well with her b...

Thank You for the volunteering idea. She does love animals. Maybe I can find something for her at the Environmental Center? I am having a hard time finding anyone who will work with us because of not having Medicaid. My insurance has some mental health coverage but it is very limited and very few pa...

I constantly assure her that I do not expect perfection. I am always telling her that it is okay to make mistakes. That that is how we learn. Her first grade teacher was terrible. Always on her. Wouldn't give her a 100 on a test because she felt she didn't try hard enough with her handwriting and th...
