Yes ruennsheng - it is very important to learn to swim if you live in Australia. There are beaches very close to where we live and many people have back yard swimming pools and it is swimming weather for a large part of the year.

Wow, what a lot of great posts and answers to my original questions and musings! Thank you everyone that has given me heaps to think about and quite some hope for the future of his language.
