I am NT, and I don't think it is strange to eat out alone. I have 3 teenagers and a husband, and sometimes I find it realxing to go have lunch or dessert or coffee alone. Sometimes I take a book, other times I people watch or (gasp!) listen in on other peoples lives... I do not like going to places ...

I hope I can diffuse the problem a little. SPED is short for Special Education. This does not mean that everyone in the program is "special" in the way many people perceive it. It actually just means that the education the student receives is adapted for them in some way. Maybe Adaptive Education wo...

Swansong and Aspie1, I am a high school autism support provider.

Would you mind if I printed your lists out for discussion with my students? I think your ideas would be helpful to several of them and great discussion prompts as well.

I agree with mgran, It is certainly time to tell some one what is happening. It may just need to be brought to the teacher's attention by someone who can help you advocate for yourself, or be a mediator in the situation. Please find someone (a school counselor, parent or such) that you trust to talk...

gina- good point. I work with a student who asked a question to clarify some notes he took; and the teacher gave him notes that had already been done. He also was upset because he knew how to do it, just needed to make sure something was correct.

waltur, I had a lot of that in school as well. I hated that the teachers could give their opinion, but we couldn't question it, or give our own. I had one great teacher that actually encouraged that my senior year, and I respected him so much for that. I think we get so much farther in life when we ...

I think it was completely inappropriate for your teacher to respond like that. I wish I could tell you how to change the teacher's attitude. I hope that kind of thing does not happen again, however if it does, I would love for you to tell a school counselor or other trusted teacher, comments like th...

Hi Withdrawn, I am sorry the problem is continuing. I think part of the problem is in how staff are taught about autism. I am a support provider, and in our school it is almost as if autism were a new thing! The few teachers I have worked with that are truly interested in supporting these students, ...

I agree lunch is the worst time of the day. I would talk to a special ed support staff or an understanding teacher about creating a lunch club, outside of the lunch room inviting the less sociable students and maybe play a board game during that time. It is a good way to make freinds who have the s...
