My nine year old son, who was diagnosed on the spectrum this year, finds the crowded, noisy cafeteria at school a very stressful place. The playground at recess also seems to stress him out. He reacts by zoning out and withdrawing into himself. At lunch, he will try to find a spot to sit, but from w...

My son was diagnosed with verbal apraxia at age two, sensory integration disorder at age five, learning disabilities at age six , possible ADD at age seven and finally high functioning autism at age eight. We just started to connect all of the dots!

My nine year old son has no meltdowns or tantrums whatsoever. He had almost none as a very young child, either. When he is overwhelmed he will become very anxious, and express his anxiety verbally or more commonly will just completely zone out. His body will be there, but his mind is somewhere else....

Thanks for the advice on not being intimidated by this individual or by this process. I called and voiced my concerns about the short notice, and they actually rescheduled for a later date when my son's psychologist could attend. I am reading as much as I can about accomodations and supports that mi...

I came here to post on my anxieties for my son's upcoming IEP meeting. My son was just diagnosed over the summer. He has been in this school three years. He had an IEP for learning disabilities and speech for two years, but the special ed director has repeatedly tried to steer us away from pursuing ...

My 8 year old son, who was recently diagnosed with autism, sometimes seems to "visualize" his emotions rather than naming them or explaining them. For example, we were recently at a rather long eye exam. He had that black lens machine with all the dials on it pressed against his face for more than t...

Thank you both so much for sharing your resources and your take on school accommodations. Do many of your kids have an aide (specifically trained in working with children on the spectrum) either full time or part time in elementary school? If so, do your kids feel okay about having the aide? I don't...

My eight year old son is newly diagnosed with high-functioning autism. We have been at the same public school since Kindergarten. He has had an IEP for a non-specific learning disability since first grade with speech therapy once a week and about 3 half hour sessions of extra assistance from the spe...

Again, I appreciate all of your replies and suggestions. I guess that the main reason that I don't feel totally comfortable with the school staff's "diagnosis" of ADD would be that when I brought up my suspicions of autism at the IEP meeting, the two members of the special ed department shook their ...

Thank you for all of your replies. I have been trying to address the bullying. Most of it has been a couple of kids verbally making fun of his naivete, and a few of the boys chasing him and trying to scare him. I do believe that his classroom teacher is taking this seriously and is not tolerating an...

New here- I've been reading several of the forums here on Wrong Planet and am just so impressed and fascinated with many of the stories and viewpoints of families and individuals. My 8 year old son has not been officially diagnosed with an ASD yet, but I believe that he will be eventually. He has al...
