Thank you, sorry I didn't get to respond earlier. My DS definitely has this funnel and does not like to be asked questions----we can be having a lovely time playing blocks on the floor, but is very resistant to switching some things around particularly when I'm asking him to do something and not jus...

How you describe that student does make me think of my DS. His question/answer processing is slower (like, pointing to items in a book, letters on the fridge) than his babbly talk. Some of his signs come second nature, though.

I will def try the voicebox tip, thanks for sharing!

My DS is 3yo and dx'd with Autism Disorder and has a profound speech delay. He's very vocal, he babbles and speaks his own language *a*lot*, at times I think he has a verbal stim.......but when it comes to actual words and vocab that he's learned, he just mouths the word and no voice comes through. ...

It's interesting the individual responses from this post. It's one of the things that makes me feel like I too is/was on the autism spectrum because I have this intuitive understanding for my nonverbal 3yo, to meet him where he is, and I am so thankful. It gives me great patience with him (I was mid...

Also, telling others depends upon the childs' wishes. Older kids may or may not feel comfortable with their mom discussing their business with their friends moms. ITA. I also agree that it depends on where the child is on the spectrum, if DS, say, remains non-verbal he'll probably need more of an e...

Maybe in some circles there's "something wrong with 'weird'" but where I come from it's a-ok, even desirable.

What I do wonder about is if he is labeled at a young age, and then makes improvements and is able to function enough to be in regular classes, will that label stay with him? That's an excellent concern. FWIW, yesterday I took an online quiz that many who post on this board took, and it said that I...

Most people think he's a late talker with hopelessly magnetic charm, and a face to die for. What happens when you take that cute little cocktail and douse everyone with "re-evaluate your thoughts on him, he's autistic." I may feel different in the future, but right now I don't see the point.

Thank you for this, my DS is only 3 and wouldn't yet understand the message, I've been toggling what the right thing to do would be. I haven't made any announcements of his dx (autism, he is presently non-verbal but I feel he will be talking) because I don't think everyone should know before he does...

Hello, new here. Hoping to gain some insight on ASD life, my son was recently dx'd with Autism Disorder, he's 3. He seems to be interested in moving his body to music. I'd like to interpret this as an interest in dance, he's very interested in Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Da...

I have benefitted from Youtube vids that portray Autism in a positive light, definitely. And yes, I too am very frustrated with the way it's portrayed in the media and modern culture.
