Well, anyway, I'm using Linux again for my server after a stint with Windows and I *still* say that Linux servers are not as user-friendly as Windows. If I didn't have backed up config files from my last try at Linux, I would still be configuring the thing. I know you guys probably think I'm an idio...

I'm a software developer, among other things, and while I use C/C++, Java, PHP and others, I've always had a soft spot for BASIC, or more specifically, object-oriented GUI BASIC, like VB, REALbasic, etc. Obviously MS VB6 is long dead, and with modern versions of MS VB only generating .NET binaries, ...

Well, to anyone following along, I finally went back to CentOS Linux today from my XP Pro box. Current server is an old 3 GHz Pentium 4 machine with 1 GB RAM. Took forever to configure, even with backed up configuration from my last foray into Linux. Just as I said before, configuring a server on Li...

The limit applies to all TCP connections in the handshaking state. You can search the event log for Event ID 4226 to see if this affected you. What you described is probably the reason of the slow down. The size of the log may also be a factor, it could grow quite large and I'm not sure firefox is ...

The web server performance difference may be due to XP's 10 half open connections limit. I did find some info on this here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314882 . It's still not super clear if it applies only to Windows services like file-sharing, print-sharing, etc. There was one paragraph that s...

you can get finder to organize objects into groups by type/kind - but i'm not sure whether it puts folders first or not... Thanks for the tip, but I already tried that, and it doesn't do what I want. I just want the Finder to display folders first like Windows and most Linux desktop environments do...

...maybe Fedora would be a decent choice for a relatively easy-to-configure LAMP server I took your advice and tried Fedora, adding the extra packages for server duty, but I was not pleased with it. I don't like the "end-user is stupid" assumption, where they lock out access to root and make you su...

I'm glad you got it going again. Xorg/X11 has always been a giant pain in the rear, at least for me. Even when I've added my desired mode in the xorg.conf file, it still sometimes wouldn't use it, even after rebooting or restarting the X server.

You are using XP server to serve Win7 clients? The web server performance difference may be due to XP's 10 half open connections limit. As for Windows networking, Win7 is optimized for SMB2 so it's possible that SMB1 doesn't do well with the new TCP/IP stack. But "taking forever to load" sounds mor...

I've used Macs on and off for almost 20 years. Some aspects of OS X are much better for me than Windows, but then there are a few really awful design problems that I can't handle in OS X. For example, you can't set the Finder to display folders first, which to me is maddening. Also, you can't set up...

Ubuntu Server or maybe Fedora would be a decent choice for a relatively easy-to-configure LAMP server. Fedora even has an option in the installer to get all the server-related stuff you need in your base install (at least, it did last time I used it... maybe two or three releases ago). Thanks! :) I...

I have always preferred Intel processors, at least lately, because any systems I have made for customers with AMD processors end up being slow in some areas. If you have to get AMD for some reason, try going with their quad-core processors instead. The video card looks okay, though it's a slightly o...
