I am more looking for reading materials - I am assuming the social worker is discussing these issues individually. timf, I'm going to have to push back on what you said here - I happen to know many children from fatherless homes who are Black who are well-disciplined, and still are targeted by polic... |

Hi, everybody - long time no see! Popping in because, although my son is mostly grown and doing OK now, I've become something of an advocate for the community here, and one of our school's social workers asked me for antiracist resources specific to kids on the spectrum. Our school district is very ... |

Here's the thing: it took forever to get my son diagnosed with AS, and significantly longer for me to get a diagnosis of "sub-clinical autism." However, those diagnoses enabled us to get the supports we needed - or at least to frame our needs appropriately. (And I was bullied in school, to... |

Adamantium, are your children of African descent? (IIRC that's not the case, or am I misremembering?) I think much of the police issues are directed not at kids of color in general but towards African-Americans in particular. I have a close relationship with our police department, and in fact my son... |

I love this thread and try to bump it every so often. I started following SuperTrooper in other places, she's wonderful. |

Not everyone in the autism community agrees with "person-first" language. I, for instance, prefer to think of myself as an "autistic person," as, obviously, does the original poster who labels herself that way. Many of us who post in this forum are on the spectrum ourselves as we... |

It really is - I had the same experience with Zoloft and Cymbalta as you. That said, his current doctor increased his dose, and he's like a new person. I don't know, it's hard. We are working hard to help him see that his "friends" are jerks (his first full day back to school, he found one... |

I was thinking of helping my son repair his part of the conflict; at this point none of us care what happens with the other boys. It's moot anyway. |

If your son got a dramatic lesson in how bad it can get if he crosses the line, hopefully, he'll pay more attention to where that line is drawn. And he's getting a higher level of support, too. Really good. It just goes to show that you never know in what clothing the Calvary will come. This is the... |

Well, we have had a weird time since last I posted - kind of bridges two threads. Girls have discovered DS. Unfortunately, even though he's totally open about his diagnosis...they don't quite get it, which is both good and bad. So, unbeknownst to me, during this whole mess with his male friends, whi... |

Fortunately, I think there are lots of things! Hard to say if it is the softness of the gelatin-packet coating or if it is the squashing-around liquid. Another thing to try if the stress toy link doesn't do it - teething packs and ice packs for little kids that are gel-filled. There are water-filled... |

UGH! I am so sorry that I didn't think of this first! Yes, the school is required to provide services - see the link below. (The ugh is that this should be stuff your local school district is telling you about!! !) From http://idea.ed.gov/explore/view/p/,root,dynamic,TopicalBrief,17, The purposes of... |

FYI, school refusal is the school's problem and should be in his IEP - and if they can't get him to go to school, they have to offer tutoring hours to make up for the school he's missed, so you should be getting help during the day. You can't possibly manage all this yourself - do you have a SPED ad... |

May I ask - what is your goal in asking this question? It seems, from the way that you are writing, like you don't want to think of yourself as autistic. It is impossible for anyone, especially lay people, to diagnose a stranger over the internet. We really can't answer that question for you - if yo... |
