This will be my last post here. Not because I am upset or don't want to explain myself, but because it is not really good for me to get overstressed, and that's precisely what is happening to me in this thread. Just because I am "neurotypical" doesn't mean I don't have anything. I do indeed have som...

Folks, I would like to sincerely apologize. If I came across as someone trying to hurt people it was due to my unfortunate choice of words. Please don't assume that I don't understand what you or your kids are going through. In fact, I went through many of those things myself. My goal here is self-e...

Autism is not a disease. It's a pervasive developmental disorder. It is not contagious. it doesn't spread throughout your body, or from person to person. The word "disorder" implies "disease" (or "illness" if you prefer, basically something pathologic in your body). Not all diseases are contagious.

I am not saying you are wrong, I am just curious. Usually, people don't get happy when they are diagnosed with a mental illness or a disability. Um. The diagnosis didn't GIVE us Aspergers or Autism. We had that before. People with AS know they're different, usually from a very young age. Being diag...

Usually, people don't get happy when they are diagnosed with a mental illness or a disability. That's a bold statement. It would be interesting to see if there's any large-scale research into it. Though it tallies with personal experience: Doctor: You're depressed. Me: Well yeah, but that's not it....

Having the diagnosis helped explain a lot of what went wrong in the past and why I've never had any friends. I'm not so much happy I have AS, it's more that I know why I'm so different from the majority of people. Are you sure you never had ANY friends? One or two good friends is quite enough, I th...

I was happy that I finally knew what was wrong with me. I was happy that I wasn't the only person on the planet that felt the way I did and that I wasn't broken or defective. Also, it's become one of my major interests so I was happy to have something new to research and obsess over. I wasn't happy...

I don't understand why the OP has 6 posts and declares people are happy to be diagnosed as autistic. Where did you gather your assumptions from? The internet or actual people you've met? Did they say that they were happy or did you come to the conclusion that because someone openly admitted they we...

now it is the time to stop trying so hard to be "Exactly" like everyone else to satisfy them and stand up for who you are, embrace your talents, and push them to the front in dealing with life and people. I am really curious - why couldn't you do it before you were diagnosed? In my opinion, you sho...

Elderwanda, thank you for posting. I am actually trying to find out more about people like you who were mistakenly diagnosed with AS by an inexperienced health-care professional. When that happens, it is very difficult to backtrack, like you did. I strongly suspect that there are many such people, b...

I'm guessing you're looking for responses from adults, sorry. Actually I am looking for responses from everyone but thanks for reminding me to ask one more question: How old are you now and how old were you when you were diagnosed? Thanks everyone for your responses. Please pass this on to other fr...

Hi everybody, I am a health care professional interested in the process of diagnosing Asperger's syndrome. If you don't mind, could each of you answer the following questions: 1) What was the specialty of the doctor or doctors who diagnosed you? 2) How many doctors did you visit to get a diagnosis? ...
